Tushara Fernando (born 5 November 1990) is a British technology executive and enterprise engineer specializing in financial services, data infrastructure, and artificial intelligence. He currently serves as the Managing Director and Head of Data and AI at Man Group, one of the world's largest independent alternative investment management firms.[1]
Fernando is recognized in the quantitative finance industry for designing frameworks that scale generative and agentic AI models securely within heavily regulated trading environments. His architectural work shifting high-frequency infrastructure into complex systematic and automated workflows has been the subject of dedicated coverage in institutional trading publications.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Fernando was born on 5 November 1990. He attended Bury Grammar School and Edenfield CE School in Greater Manchester. He later attended the University of Manchester, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science in 2012.[3]
Career
[edit]Early career and investment banking
[edit]Fernando began his career in financial technology in May 2012 at Barclays Investment Bank, focusing on Wealth and Investment Management (IMD) sales technology. In 2014, he moved to the financial consulting firm Excelian (later acquired by Luxoft) as a Senior Technical Consultant, advising financial institutions on trading infrastructure.[4]
Goldman Sachs
[edit]In September 2015, Fernando joined Goldman Sachs in London. During his six-year tenure at the investment bank, he held multiple leadership positions within its asset management technology divisions. He initially served as the Head of Core Platforms for Fixed Income before being promoted to Executive Director and Head of Portfolio Construction Technology for Fixed Income within Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM).[5]
Man Group
[edit]In October 2021, Fernando was hired by Man Group to serve as the Head of Fast Trading Technology for Man AHL, the firm's flagship systematic and quantitative trading business. His early mandates focused on transitioning execution teams away from rigid legacy algos into modern, complex systematic data architectures—work that established him as an industry voice on algorithmic efficiency.[6]
In February 2025, Man Group appointed Fernando as Managing Director and Head of Enterprise Engineering, expanding his oversight across the group's central operating applications, fund accounting platforms, and core client digital infrastructure.[7]
He was subsequently elevated to Head of Data and AI for Man Group. In this role, he leads the firm's global data management team, strategic data sourcing operations, and core machine learning platforms.[8] Fernando's strategies for integrating corporate data layers, scaling token usage, and mitigating risk have been covered in major institutional investor publications, including Bloomberg, The Telegraph, and Pensions & Investments.
Public speaking and media appearances
[edit]Fernando has been highly visible in the technology and asset management sectors for spearheading Man Group’s generative AI and "agentic AI" workflows, where autonomous AI agents assist quantitative analysts in researching, backtesting, and proposing live systematic trading signals.
In May 2026, Fernando was a featured speaker at Anthropic's premier developer conference, Code w/ Claude 2026, in London. His presentation, titled *"Trading signals that trade themselves: Running Claude Code inside a regulated investment firm,"* detailed the development of a governed skills framework that allowed Claude Code to autonomously research and deploy trading signals managing real capital under strict compliance guardrails.
In July 2026, Fernando appeared alongside Man Group CTO Gary Collier on Bloomberg's Odd Lots podcast hosted by Joe Weisenthal and Tracy Alloway. The episode, "One of the World's Largest Hedge Funds on Its 86x Growth in Token Spending," explored the mechanics of empowering quants with generative tools, ensuring the safety and explainability of algorithmic models, and navigating an 86-fold explosive growth in the firm's LLM token utilization.[9]
