Toyota Libya F.Z.C. is an automotive distribution company in Libya and the authorized distributor of Toyota vehicles and parts in the country. It was established in 2010 and is a subsidiary of the Japanese trading company Sumitomo Corporation. The company's headquarters are in the Misrata Free Zone in Misrata.
Toyota Motor Corporation's corporate history records the establishment of its Libyan distributor in January 2010. Sumitomo Corporation has subsequently listed Toyota Libya among its overseas automotive subsidiaries, with its business described as the import and sale of Toyota vehicles and parts in Libya.
History
[edit]Toyota Libya was established in the Misrata Free Zone in January 2010. By 2012, the company was operating vehicle distribution activities in Libya and had begun developing a vocational training programme for graduates of Libyan technical institutes.
During the deterioration of the security situation in Libya in 2014, reports circulated that Toyota's operations in Misrata had been suspended. Libya Herald reported in August 2014 that Toyota Libya continued operating from its Misrata facilities despite the security situation and a decline in vehicle sales.
Vocational training
[edit]In 2012, Toyota Libya established a vocational training initiative known as Discover Your Talent. Libya Herald reported in September 2012 that the programme was intended to provide graduates of Libyan technical institutes with practical automotive training. The first course was held in Misrata later that year.
The programme combined automotive maintenance training with subjects including English, computer skills and technical reporting. In 2013, Libya Herald reported on graduates of the programme and interviewed participants about their training and employment prospects. Further groups of trainees completed the programme in subsequent years.
In 2018, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Toyota Libya entered into a partnership to provide vocational training to young Libyans, including internally displaced people. The programme received support through a European Union-funded UNDP project.
In March 2021, UNDP reported that 55 young men had received training in automotive mechanics and 60 young women had received customer-service training through the partnership. A further group participated in on-the-job training at Toyota dealerships in Tripoli, Benghazi, Misrata and Zliten.
The Discover Your Talent programme continued during the following years. In January 2024, Libya Herald reported the start of its twentieth training course. In August 2025, the newspaper reported that 23 groups had completed general-mechanics training and four groups had completed bodywork and painting training.
Operations
[edit]Toyota Libya imports and distributes Toyota vehicles and spare parts in Libya. Its main operations are based in the Misrata Free Zone. The company distributes vehicles and provides after-sales services through authorized Toyota dealers in Libya.
Toyota Motor Corporation listed Toyota Libya as its distributor for Libya in its historical record of overseas distributors, while Sumitomo Corporation identifies Toyota Libya as part of its international automotive business.
Ownership
[edit]Toyota Libya is a subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, a Japanese trading and investment company. Sumitomo Corporation's corporate records list Toyota Libya F.Z.C. as an automotive subsidiary engaged in the import and sale of Toyota vehicles and parts in Libya.
