Tmoney Tagless is a contactless fare-payment technology developed by Tmoney that lets public-transport passengers pay fares without tapping a card or smartphone at the gate. Known as a Be-In Be-Out (BIBO) system, it detects a rider's entry and exit automatically using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and other positioning technologies. It was first commercially deployed on Seoul's Ui Sinseol Line in September 2023, described by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and local media as the world's first commercial tagless public-transport fare service.[1][2]
History
[edit]Tmoney, the operator of Seoul's public-transport payment system, piloted tagless fare payment on Korean subway lines from 2022.[3] In mid-2023, Seoul Metro, operator of Seoul Subway Lines 1 to 8, announced a trial of the tagless system at four stations (Yongdap, Oksu, Dongjak and Sadang) to verify location-detection accuracy before a wider rollout.[4] On 6 September 2023, the service launched commercially on the Ui Sinseol Line, initially covering 12 stations.[1][2] It was subsequently extended to the Incheon metro, Seoul Subway Line 9 and selected Seoul city buses.[5][6]
Technology
[edit]Tagless is a Be-In Be-Out (BIBO) method built on existing automated fare collection (AFC) infrastructure. It detects a passenger's entry and exit and charges the fare automatically, so riders are not required to present a card or phone.[7] According to the operator, the system selectively combines Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), ultra-wideband (UWB) and vision-based AI with transit-infrastructure signals to recognise journeys.[8] Fares are processed on a server-based architecture using a virtual card system and a virtual terminal (VT), allowing operators to apply new fares and policies without replacing terminal hardware.[8]
Recognition
[edit]The Ui-Sinseol tagless service received the New Technology Innovation Award at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in 2023 and an award at Transport Ticketing Global in 2024.[9]
