Thomas Jared Pearl (born 1959) is an American former administrative assistant who was convicted in 2000 on federal charges related to child pornography and attempted sexual solicitation of a minor. In the early 2000s, he posted videos online in which he consumed his own feces and urine, and his image later became the basis of an internet meme. In 2026, his name gave rise to a new Italian word, tomperlesco.
Early life and employment
[edit]Pearl has said that he grew up in extreme poverty and, as a child, resorted to eating his own feces to survive. No independent verification of this account exists.
Before his arrest, he was employed as an administrative assistant at the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, working under Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a sister of President John F. Kennedy. The foundation dismissed him after learning of his criminal charges.[1]
Online activities
[edit]During the early 2000s, Pearl uploaded videos to several adult websites, often greeting viewers with the line, "Hi, my name is Tom Pearl, and I'm gonna eat my diarrhea for 'ya." In those clips, he proceeded to consume his own excrement and urine. He used handles such as "tompearl" and "toiletmouth." In later comments, he acknowledged that he found sexual arousal in knowing that people watched his content.
Criminal case

[edit]In November 1998, Pearl began exchanging emails, instant messages, and telephone calls with a Utah social worker, Camielle Call-Tarbet, who was posing online as a 12‑year‑old girl named "Kami." Pearl sent her child pornography and repeatedly tried to arrange a face‑to‑face sexual meeting. Detective Brad Franke of the Logan City Police Department later joined the operation, posing as "Uncle Dan."[2]
Arrest, conviction, and sentence
[edit]Pearl was arrested on May 21, 1999, upon landing at Salt Lake City International Airport, where he had traveled to meet the supposed minor. Investigators found computer disks with child pornography in his possession.[2]
A federal jury convicted him in May 2000 on four counts:
- transporting child pornography via computer and by aircraft
- possessing child pornography
- using interstate commerce to attempt to persuade a minor to engage in illicit sex
- traveling across state lines to engage in sexual acts with a minor
He received a sentence of 97 months (roughly eight years) in federal prison, plus three years of supervised release.[2]
Appeal
[edit]Pearl appealed, contending that the Supreme Court's 2002 ruling in Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition invalidated parts of the Child Pornography Prevention Act and thus required his convictions to be overturned. The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals partly agreed, vacating certain counts, but held that he could be retried on those charges because the issue was a trial error rather than insufficient evidence, so double jeopardy did not apply.[2]
Meme and linguistic legacy
[edit]In 2026, Pearl's likeness unexpectedly went viral on platforms such as TikTok and X, with users turning his image into a "golden" or Silver Surfer‑style figure and nicknaming him a "realistic trollface."[3]
On June 6, 2026, a satirical post claimed that a user had convinced his 11‑year‑old brother to include Pearl in a fake "manifesto." The claim was widely shared and prompted fact‑checking articles.[3]
Also in May 2026, social media saw unconfirmed rumours that Pearl had died.
The Italian encyclopedic institute Treccani discussed in June 2026 that the neologism tomperlesco - a deonymic adjective meaning "relating to faeces" - had emerged in online Italian, derived from Pearl's surname.[4]

[edit]Pearl lives in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Public records do not disclose information about his family or marital status.
