Ko Thein Zaw (Burmese:ကိုသိန်းဇော်; born 14 September 1984), also know as Zaw Zaw, is the founder of free public libraries in Myanmar. He established numerous libraries across various townships in Myanmar, enabling people to borrow and read books free of charge.[1]

Early life and education

Zaw Zaw was born in Si Thar Village, Ka Taw Village Tract, Kyaukpadaung Township, Mandalay Region. Zaw Zaw established a free library while selling grilled fished in Myanmar.He used this earnings from selling grilled fish to purchase books and undertook initiatives such as sharing books for free, setting up libraries, and delivering books to readers to no cost.[2]

Library work

In 2007, Zaw Zaw established a free Libruary in Mandalay. He allowed local residents to borrow books from the library at no cost. For those unable to visit the Libruary, he delivered books directly to their homes by bicycle for readers, he organized reading-related activities at the library.[3][4]

Awards and recognition

In 2015, Zaw Zaw received the People's Prestide Award (Pyi Thu Gon Yi Award) in Yangon.[5] Ko Zaw Zaw, a founder of free libraries from Kyaukpadaung, Mandalay Region, was personally selected by States Counsellor Daw Aung San Su Kyi in july 2016 as someone worthy of recognition.[6] Sources a report that he used the income earned from selling grilled fish in yangon to fund his library initiatives.[7]
