History

[edit]

In 1880, a group of entrepreneurs founded The Valley Independent, and was published by Trib Total Media.[2] In 2015, Trib Total Media announced they would be closing The Valley Independent office, along with The Daily News in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, unless they could find a buyer.[3] A sale could not be finalized, and on December 16, 2015 they announced the final paper would be printed on December 31, 2015.[4] Four months later, on April 15, 2016, Trib Total Media found a group of business men to purchase The Valley Independent.[5] On May 2, 2016, the first newspaper was printed under the new name The Mon Valley Independent.

The first three years of the paper changing hands was a tough transition for the newly formed Mid Mon Valley Publishing Co. Massive layoffs and difficulties bringing back subscribers after the four month hiatus, dug the paper into a massive hole. Now while this new group had plenty of business experience, none had any background in newspapers or journalism. In an effort to bring in more money and grow their subscriber base back to its former glory, they turned their focus to the readers and the people in the Mon Valley area. Hiring ad consultants, they worked with business' budgets, allowing for smaller local places to have an opportunity to be seen.[6][7]
