Tempesst are a London-based alternative rock band formed by Australian twin brothers Toma and Andy Banjanin. The current lineup consists of Toma Banjanin (vocals and guitar), Andy Banjanin (drums), Blake Misipeka (bass) and Eric Weber (guitar).[1][2] The Banjanin brothers and Misipeka grew up on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. After relocating to London, the brothers met guitarist Eric Weber and formed Tempesst.[1] The group later established its own recording studio, Pony Studios, in Hackney, as well as the independent record label Pony Recordings.[3] The band have released three studio albums: Must Be a Dream (2020), Prisoner of Desire (2023) and Forbidden Fruit (2024).[4]

History

[edit]

Background and formation

[edit]

Twin brothers Toma and Andy Banjanin grew up near Maroochydore, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Bassist Blake Misipeka was a neighbour of the brothers.[1] Toma, Andy and future keyboardist Kane Reynolds played together as teenagers, including in a church band.[5][6] Toma Banjanin subsequently lived in Williamsburg, New York, moving there in 2010. He later relocated to London.[6] In a 2025 interview, Banjanin stated that although several members had known each other in Australia, Tempesst itself formed in London. Andy Banjanin moved to the city first, with Toma and Misipeka following. The brothers met Swiss-American guitarist Eric Weber within months of arriving.[1] The band's first rehearsals took place at Vatican Studios in Bethnal Green.[1] Tempesst began releasing music in 2015.[5]

Early releases

[edit]

The band released its debut EP, Adult Wonderland, on 27 October 2017. The four-track release included "Waiheke", "Tidal Wave", "Feel Better" and "God Knows I Needed a Muse".[7] A second EP, Doomsday, followed on 24 August 2018 through Pony Recordings.[8] The EP contained "A Little Bit of Trouble", "Roller Coaster", "Doomsday" and "Eric's Dream".[9] The material drew upon psychedelic, folk and alternative rock influences, with the band using a relatively short recording period in an attempt to retain an organic sound.[10]

Pony Studios and Must Be a Dream

[edit]

After settling in London, the band established Pony Studios in a warehouse in Hackney. The space allowed the group to rehearse and record independently and later became closely associated with their label, Pony Recordings.[3][6] Toma Banjanin has said that the band established its own label because its members wanted to retain control over their recordings and other creative work. The group also produced much of its own artwork, photography and video material.[3] Tempesst began work on its debut studio album after returning from SXSW in 2019. The album was recorded at Pony Studios, with the band benefiting from having unrestricted access to its own recording space.[5] Must Be a Dream was released on 30 September 2020 through Pony Recordings.[11] American Songwriter described the record as incorporating psychedelic rock alongside 1960s and 1970s pop and rock influences.[5] The album's release took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, preventing the band from undertaking its planned touring schedule.[3]

Prisoner of Desire

[edit]

Following the release of their debut, Tempesst began working on a second studio album. Banjanin described the later material as more personal and direct than the band's earlier work, with the group continuing to use analogue recording techniques, vintage microphones and instruments.[12] The album was preceded by singles including "Prisoner of Desire", "True Love's in Decline" and "Rags of Love".[12] Prisoner of Desire was released on 3 March 2023 via Pony Recordings.[13] The record focused heavily on romantic relationships, companionship, autonomy and changing ideas of love.[12][13] Gigwise described the album as combining psychedelic rock with elements of jazz, country and 1960s pop, and noted the use of strings and other orchestral arrangements alongside the band's core instrumentation.[13] The subsequent tour included a show at London's Islington Assembly Hall as well as performances elsewhere in the United Kingdom and Europe.[12]

Forbidden Fruit

[edit]

Tempesst released the single "Sad Eyes" on 19 June 2024.[14] The band's third studio album, Forbidden Fruit, was released on 29 November 2024 through Pony Recordings.[15] The nine-track album contains "Waste It With You", "Forbidden Fruit", "Sad Eyes", "I Want More", "Long Way Down", "Reach You", "Anonymous in New York", "The Golden Fleece" and "Blue Ribbon".[15] Pony Recordings described the album as marking a change in the band's production style, moving away from the more heavily layered production of its previous recordings in favour of a modern high-fidelity approach while retaining elements of psychedelic and alternative rock.[16] Following the album's release, the band announced its first Australian tour, with performances in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney in January and February 2025.[1][2] In the January 2025 interview with The Music, Banjanin said the band planned to travel to Maleny to begin writing another album following the Australian dates.[1] During 2025, Tempesst continued touring the United Kingdom and Europe. The band's lineup during this period was listed as Toma Banjanin, Andy Banjanin, Blake Misipeka and Eric Weber.[2] A four-track live EP, Live from the Tobacco Warehouse, was released on 19 September 2025.[17]

Musical style

[edit]

Tempesst have been described as an alternative, indie and psychedelic rock band.[5][13] The band's early work drew heavily from music of the 1960s and 1970s, while incorporating contemporary indie and alternative rock influences.[3][10] Banjanin has said that the band often uses traditional analogue recording techniques, including recording to two-inch tape and using vintage microphones and instruments.[12] American Songwriter compared aspects of Must Be a Dream to Crosby, Stills & Nash, while Gigwise identified influences and stylistic similarities including The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and psychedelic rock.[5][13]
