Tamar Levi

[edit]

Tamar Levi is a multilingual artist, author and comedian. Born in Cornwall and raised in Alaska, now based in Greece, she has worked in painting, illustration, children's publishing, performance and education. Her artwork includes continuous-line drawings and paintings exhibited internationally.

Early life and education

[edit]

Levi was born in Truro, Cornwall, and was raised in Anchorage, Alaska.

Levi studied Philosophy at King's College London and subsequently completed postgraduate study in Psychology and Education at the University of Cambridge.

She later undertook doctoral research at the University of Roehampton London for which she won the 2012 Santander Scholarship and Mobility Fund.[1] In June 2012, Levi presented research at the University of Roehampton's Communication in Context conference. Her presentation concerned her doctoral research into literature and human rights.[2]

An interview with Levi was commissioned for the Camden Encounters Project celebrated by Camden Council, London to commemorate her founding a community critique group for local authors [3] [4] [5][6]. Levi's portrait, photographed and included in a presentation curated by Elly Clarke, was displayed in Camden Town Hall [7] and The Roundhouse London in 2015 [8] [9].

[19]

Smaller collaborations include providing cover art and illustrations for Cycle Lifestyle Issue 9 (2013)[20] [21] as well as illustrations for the University of Notre Dame's Mellon Philosophy as a Way of Life Project (2019).[22]

Non-English language works include cover art for the award-winning Greek language poetry trilogy of Athanasia Katsigianni,[23][24][25] [26] [27] illustrations for the Greek theatre production brochure of Bonnie and Clyde (2012),[28] film stills and story board illustrations for the Japanese short film Snowchild directed by Uta Arning (2012),[29] Greek OZON magazine article edited by Danai Dragona (2013),[30] Greek-to-English editor for the publication Paediatric Pulmonary Function Testing: Indications and Interpretation (2016),[31] a Francophone card game called Consentement t'en dis quoi? [32] and the French language theatre play DELPHI.[33]

Levi illustrated several books and book covers in Peter Worley's Philosophy Foundation series.[34]The Philosophy Shop received a Gold award in the Philosophy category of the 2012 Foreword Reviews INDIES and was subsequently recognised by the Education Resources Awards[35] and the New England Book Festival Winner of the Anthology award[36]. The If Odyssey and Once Upon an If received recognition in the Education Resources Awards and Bronze awards in the Primary Teacher Update Annual Awards. Provocations was shortlisted for an Education Resources Award[37][38].[39][40]

Levi's work as an illustrator is documented by Bloomsbury[41] and Hachette[42] publisher records. The If Machine was launched in The British Museum.[43] Her books are also listed in international library and bibliographic catalogues.

Visual art

[edit]

Levi's visual art includes painting, pen-and-ink illustration and continuous-line drawing. Her work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in Belgium and elsewhere.[44]

In 2017, her paintings were exhibited in a solo show at the European Parliament in Brussels. The exhibition was reported by Greek news outlets including ERT,[45] Patris [46]and News 24/7.[47]

In 2018, her paintings were exhibited in solo shows, Past, Present & Future at CliqueArt, curated by Bengi Lostar Ozdemir,[48] and Great Minds at Green Door Gallery, Brussels curated by Helen O'Sullivan-Tyrrell. [49] [50] [51] For both she was interviewed by Greek Public Television (ERT).[52]

In 2019, Levi's portrait of 19 children was commissioned and put on permanent exhibition at a school in Brussels.[53] In 2020, Levi presented Immensities, a solo exhibition at ArtBase in Brussels. The exhibition was covered by Mega Channel,[54] We Love Brussels,[55] BRUZZ TV [56] and the Greek newspaper H Efimerida Ton Syntakton (Efsyn), which described the works as paintings inspired by Greek landscapes and places.[57] Her portrait was photographed by director Anja Strelec.[58] [59]

Levi also produced a series of continuous-line portraits for the European Parliament's Feminist Forum in 2020. The project was subsequently discussed in Brussels press and cultural coverage.[60]

The original cover art Levi provided for Athanasia Katsigianni's poetry trilogy were exhibited in 2024 at O Philologikos Syllogos Parnassou (Ο Φιλολογικός Σύλλογος «Παρνασσός»), the oldest cultural society in Greece.[61][62] In early 2025, Levi's solo show From Muse to Artist opened at The Nine, Brussels.[63] Another solo show opened in late 2025 at the Maison Culturelle Belgo Albanaise on Brussels' Grand Place featuring Levi's paintings of the Grand Place.[64]

Theatre and performance

[edit]

Levi developed DELPHI, a multidisciplinary children's theatre production combining live visual art, music and acting. The project originated as a graphic novel written in English and was adapted into a French stage work in which Levi creates continuous-line drawings live during the performance. The story is performed by actors while flute player Kalliopi Bolovinou accompanies the action with contemporary and classical music.

An early live version of DELPHI was presented as part of TEDxULB in Brussels in October 2020, with Levi performing live continuous-line art alongside Bolovinou. Levi subsequently developed the work as a full children's theatre production.[65]

The production was developed in Belgium with the Kaleidoscope production team and received funding through Un Futur Pour La Culture of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. Development included workshops and residencies involving Belgian theatre venues and performers.

In March 2023, DELPHI was performed at Le Senghor in Brussels and at the Columban Theatre in Wavre. The Brussels Times described it as a multidisciplinary children's production addressing grief and emotional change, with Levi visually creating the protagonist's journey through live one-line drawings.[66]

Comedy

[edit]

Levi has performed stand-up comedy in Belgium, in both English and the Greek language, and has appeared in international media coverage of the Brussels comedy scene.[67][68][69]

In 2024, BRUZZ profiled Levi as an artist and stand-up comedian, describing her work in comedy alongside her background in illustration and children's publishing.[70]

Charity and Non-Profit Work

[edit]

Beginning in the early 2010s, Levi worked with Novel Rights, a social-enterprise digital publishing initiative focused on literature and human rights. Her work included illustration and cover design for short fiction published through the project as well as promotional materials, such as the London School of Economic's Space for Thought Literary Festival (2013).[71]

Levi has donated art to promote the i=U music festival (2013),[72] donated art for auction by the European Federation of Associations of Families of People with Mental Illness (EUFAMI) (2017), donated art for auction by Promote Ukraine (2014),[73] provided professional portraits of 60+ participants live during the European Union Eastern Partnership Civil Society (2017),[74] donated art to Autism Europe Link Magazine (2019),[75] designed a card game with Mathilde Borchard based on consent for the Federation of Pluralist Family Planning Centers (FCPPF), L'Estime ASBL (2019) [76] and participated in fundraising connected with Darkness Into Light Belgium, a suicide-prevention and mental-health initiative.

In 2024, the Greek newspaper Efsyn reported on Levi's involvement in the successful fundraising of €48,000 for a Darkness Into Light event at the Irish Embassy[77] in Brussels and described artwork donated by her for fundraising sold through Green Door Gallery. [78] [79] Levi met with EU President Roberta Metsola,[80] patron of the Darkness Into Light Brussels chapter, to discuss her vision for greater mental health awareness. The Bulletin also reported on charity art sales involving original Levi pen and ink drawings. [81]

Levi's artwork was turned into gold, silver and bronze medals for the 2026 LUNA International Space Competition, a science award winning programme for schools.[82] [83] [84]
