Talos Linux is an open-source API-driven Linux distribution purpose-built for Kubernetes by Sidero Labs^[1]. Unlike most Linux distributions^[2], Talos does not use the GNU operating system, and does not provide a shell interface^[1].

Design

Talos Linux is intended to be secure without any extra post-install configuration. It ships with 40 OS binaries as opposed to hundreds or thousands that a general-purpose OS might have out of the box, for example^[3].

Function

After the operating system has been installed on the target machine, the only method of interfacing with it is over the ethernet-based API using the CLI tool talosctl. For that, the IP-address of the machine must be known.

Name

In Greek mythology, Talos was a bronze automaton that defended the island of Crete from pirates. The name was found fitting because of its connection to order and safety^[4].
