Taj Carter Farrant (born in 2009 or 2010) is an Australian-born blues rock guitarist and singer-songwriter, who relocated to the United States in 2024.[1][2] He gained wider attention as a child through videos of his guitar playing and appearances on television in 2019, including The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Australia's Got Talent.[3][4] Farrant has performed with Carlos Santana and on concert dates with Buddy Guy.[5][2] His debut studio album, Chapter One, was independently released in 2024 and reached number eight on the Australian ARIA Jazz & Blues Albums chart.[6]

Early life

[edit]

Taj Carter Farrant,[7] was born in 2009 or 2010 in Central Coast, New South Wales.[8][9] His parents are both tattoo artists.[10] His father, Brandin Farrant, is a drummer and became his talent manager.[11][12] Farrant was raised with a younger sister, who is also a drummer.[13]

Farrant became interested in playing guitar after attending an AC/DC concert with his father and seeing guitarist Angus Young perform.[14] He received his first guitar and learnt from his father, who posted Farrant's short performance videos on YouTube.[4] He practised for about eight hours a day from the age of seven.[14]

Career

[edit]

In October 2018 Farrant performed at the Byron Bay Guitar Festival.[15] In the following year he appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he performed the guitar solo from Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine".[4] He also appeared on Australia's Got Talent season 9 in August–September and was eliminated in semi-final 5.[3]

On 24 January 2020, Farrant appeared as a guest during a Santana concert at the House of Blues in Las Vegas and performed during "Boogie Man/Maggot Brain".[16]

Farrant later began touring in the United States. In early 2023 Farrant started touring North America with Nathan Bryce and Loaded Dice.[10] In 2024, he performed shows associated with Buddy Guy's Damn Right Farewell tour.[2] That August, he performed two sets at Lollapalooza in Chicago.[2] In 2026, Farrant embarked on his first tour of the United Kingdom and Europe.[17][18] The tour included Farrant's UK debut at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, followed later that month by performances at De Bosuil in Weert and Merleyn in Nijmegen during his first tour of continental Europe.[19][20][21]

Farrant released his debut studio album, Chapter One, in August 2024.[22] The album peaked at number eight on the ARIA Jazz & Blues Albums chart.[6] Blues Rock Review reported that the album also reached number two on the Billboard blues chart.[23]

Musical style and influences

[edit]

Farrant has identified Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson and Buddy Guy among his favorite guitarists.[2][24]
