Supratit Banerjee (born 23 February 2014) is an English chess player. He holds the FIDE title of FIDE Master (FM). In August 2026, Banerjee completed his third International Master (IM) norm and the accompanying rating requirement. Several publications reported at the time that he had become England's youngest-ever International Master,[2] though formal ratification of the title by FIDE remains pending. The title is scheduled to be considered at the 3rd FIDE Council of 2026 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.[1] He originally represented Scotland in international competition before transferring federations to England in February 2024.[3]

Early life and chess career

[edit]

Banerjee began playing chess in Scotland from 2020, at the age of six. He continued with online chess lessons and inter-club matches.[4] His first international tournament was the 2021 European Youth Chess Championship, where he represented Scotland in the Under-8 category.[5]

By 2023 he was competing for a London-based school, Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy,[6][7] and playing club chess for Coulsdon Chess Academy, before joining Kingston Chess Club later in 2024.[8][9]

At the 2022 British Under-8 Championship, Banerjee won the title with a score of 6/7.[10] Later that year, he also won the Under-8 section of the Delancey UK Schools' Chess Challenge Terafinal, scoring 10/11 to take first place on tiebreak.[11]

The following year, Banerjee was named Chess Maestro at the BYITC Inspire Awards, recognising his early chess achievements.[6] He was part of the Scotland team that won the Glorney Cup after a 58-year gap, having first won it in 1965.[12] He was awarded the Candidate Master (CM) title that year.[13]

Banerjee transferred his FIDE federation from Scotland to England in February 2024.[3] In October 2024, he won the Under-10 section of the Delancey UK Schools' Chess Challenge Terafinal, scoring 9.5/11.[7] He plays for CSC/Kingston, the club's combined team in the 4NCL, and was a member of the CSC/Kingston squad that was promoted to the league's first division for the 2024–25 season; a review of that season named him the team's most valuable contributor.[14]

At the October 2025 UK Chess Blitz Championship, Banerjee reached the final after qualifying through a regional heat. He finished eighth out of 16 players, in a field that included grandmasters, international masters and FIDE masters.[15] At the 2026 British Rapid Championship in March, he finished joint third on points.[16] His performances for CSC/Kingston in the 4NCL were reported by the Financial Times.[16]
