Stefano Cardoselli (born 1971) is an Italian comic book artist, illustrator, and writer based in Orbetello, Tuscany.[1] He has been creating comics professionally since 2000 and has collaborated with publishers including Heavy Metal Magazine, 2000 AD, Simon & Schuster, Mad Cave Studios, Scout Comics, Antarctic Press, and Source Point Press.[2]

Cardoselli won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel in 2022 for The Inhabitant of the Lake, co-created with author Alessandro Manzetti.[3] In 2025 he received the Carlo Boscarato Award for Best Artist at the Treviso Comic Book Festival, considered one of the most prestigious recognitions in Italian comics.[4]

Career

Early work and Heavy Metal Magazine

Cardoselli began his professional comics career in 2000 as a contributor to Heavy Metal Magazine, the American science fiction and fantasy publication, with which he became a frequent collaborator over the following decades.[5] His stories published in the magazine include The Disco Brothers (January 2004), Soul Crusher (March 2005), Scenes from the Border (May 2005), and The Chronicles of Dust and Bones (June 2014).

Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and editorial director of Heavy Metal, has publicly commented on Cardoselli's work:

I HATE this guy! I've only published everything he's sent me! I think he can draw his ass off, and look forward to his next contribution.[6]

2000 AD and Tales of Telguuth

Cardoselli contributed to the British anthology comic 2000 AD (Rebellion), becoming one of the artists featured in the collected edition Tales of Telguuth (2015), a tribute to writer Steve Moore published after Moore's death in 2014.[7] The collection features an introduction written by Alan Moore, described as the first piece Alan Moore had written for a 2000 AD publication in twenty years. The volume was published by Rebellion on March 11, 2015.[8]

The Inhabitant of the Lake and Bram Stoker Award

Cardoselli collaborated with Italian author Alessandro Manzetti on several horror graphic novels published by Independent Legions Publishing. Their work The Inhabitant of the Lake won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel at StokerCon 2022, held in Denver, Colorado.[9][10] The award was announced by the Horror Writers Association (HWA) on May 14, 2022. Cardoselli had previously received nominations in the same category for Her Life Matters (Or Brooklyn Frankenstein) (2020) and Kraken Inferno: The Last Hunt (2022).[2]

Mad Cave Studios

Cardoselli joined Mad Cave Studios as a creator-owned contributor. His four-issue miniseries Don't Spit in the Wind (2023), for which he served as both writer and artist, is set in a dystopian future where Earth has become uninhabitable and a crew of garbage collectors works to clean up the planet's remains.[11] The first issue was published on March 29, 2023.[12]

Reviewers described the series as a work where Cardoselli's art suggests comparisons to artists such as Moebius and Geoff Darrow.[11]

In a 2023 interview with Mad Cave Studios, Cardoselli cited Jean Giraud (Moebius), Enki Bilal, Frank Miller, and Geoff Darrow as his primary artistic influences, alongside cinema — particularly the work of Ridley Scott, Fritz Lang, and David Cronenberg — as foundational to his visual style.[13]

Cardoselli subsequently collaborated with writer Francesca Perillo on Love Me: A Romance Story, a four-issue series distributed by Mad Cave Studios, and Where Does the Rainbow End? (2026), a sci-fi series also published by Mad Cave Studios.[1]

Film work

In addition to his comics work, Cardoselli has worked in the film industry as a character designer and storyboard artist.[13]

Artistic style

Cardoselli's visual style is characterized by dense, detailed linework rooted in science fiction, horror, and dystopian imagery. He has described his influences as spanning cinema, music, and literature, with particular reference to the cyberpunk aesthetics of Ridley Scott and the dystopian atmospheres of Fritz Lang and David Cronenberg, alongside a deep interest in the horror imagery of Clive Barker and Stephen King.[1] Critics have compared his work to artists such as Moebius, Geoff Darrow, and Frank Miller.[11][13]
