Spin FM was a commercial radio station based in Helsinki, Finland, that specialized in urban rhythm music, including hip-hop, R&B, and dance music. Founded in 2009 by music entrepreneur Vesa Matara, the station was notable for being the first primarily English-speaking radio station in Finland to focus explicitly on urban street culture and youth demographics.[1]
Concept and Broadcasting Format
[edit]Spin FM pioneered a "reality radio" concept in Finland by operating live broadcast studios directly inside high-traffic retail spaces. The station's initial broadcasting studio was situated in the Forum shopping mall in central Helsinki. Through an internal broadcast arrangement, Spin FM was played throughout the mall's indoor speaker system, reaching an estimated physical footprint of nearly 500,000 visitors per week. The station subsequently relocated its public-facing studios to Narinkkatori and the Kamppi shopping mall.[2]
The station was also a digital pioneer in the Finnish media landscape, becoming the country's first radio station to implement a multi-camera live streaming platform on its website (spinfm.fi). This setup allowed online viewers and listeners to watch studio operations from multiple angles and interact live with hosts, DJs, and studio guests.
Initially broadcasting on terrestrial FM frequencies, the station targeted listeners aged 15 to 40. In July 2015, Spin FM transitioned into an internet-only format after its capital-region frequency (101.4 MHz) was transferred to another media operator.[3] The station operated as a digital network stream until corporate operations ceased around 2020.
Partnerships and Events
[edit]The station expanded its commercial and cultural footprint through multiple corporate partnerships, joint media ventures, and entertainment industry collaborations:
- Independent Media Alliance: From 2012 to 2015, Spin FM formed a strategic advertising partnership alongside fellow independent broadcasters Basso Radio and Radio Helsinki. This joint sales alliance allowed the three stations to pool their advertising inventories, effectively covering a substantial majority of the urban, music-focused youth and adult target demographics within the Helsinki metropolitan area.[4]
- Record Label Collaborations: Spin FM worked closely with major domestic and international record labels, coordinating marketing campaigns and organizing specialized promotional events for their artist rosters.
- City Digital: Spin FM partnered with the City Digital media network to align its urban youth outreach across wider digital platforms.[5]
- MTV Finland: Spin FM served as the primary media and radio partner for MTV in Finland for five consecutive years. This collaboration included joint promotional campaigns, cross-media television pilot productions via a "Spin TV" division, and official coverage and ticket promotions for the annual MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs).[6]
- Finnair: The Finnish flag carrier airline integrated curated Spin FM music playlists directly into the inflight entertainment units of its international flights.[1]
- Live Events and Cruises: Spin FM organized hundreds of nightclub events across Finland's major university and student cities. Additionally, the station hosted multiple sold-out passenger cruise events on Viking Line vessels under the branding concept "Urban Xpress."
