Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation is a Japanese semiconductor company headquartered in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture. It primarily focuses on the design and manufacturing of CMOS image sensors, while also producing LiDAR sensors for automotive applications, Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors, and microdisplays..[1]. The company was established in 2015 through a spin-off from its parent company, Sony Corporation, where the semiconductor business had previously operated as an internal division.

As of 2026, Sony Semiconductor Solutions holds 45-50% of the global image sensor market, mainly supplying sensors for smartphone cameras[2]. The company is also a major player in the automotive sector and the digital camera market.

Early semiconductor business

Sony's involvement in semiconductors dates to 1953, when co-founder Masaru Ibuka and future president Kazuo Iwama traveled to the United States and secured licensing rights to the transistor from Western Eletric. In 1954, Sony successfully prototyped Japan's first transistor. The following year, the company launched the TR-55, the first transistor radio to bear the "SONY" logo[3]. By 1960, Sony had completed the Atsugi plant, its primary semiconductor manufacturing facility, achieving monthly production of one million transistors[4]. Additional early milestones included the invention of the Esaki tunnel diode in 1957 and the commercialization of the world's first monolithic IC for small radios in 1966[5][6].

Development of CCD image sensors

Research into charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensors began in 1970 at Sony's Central Research Laboratory, supported by Iwama as a means to revitalize the semiconductor division[7]. Key milestones included an 8×8 pixel test array in 1972 and a practical 110,000-pixel CCD in 1978. The first commercial CCD image sensor, the ICX008, was released in 1980 and adopted in the XC-1 CCD color camera installed in All Nippon Airways' "Sky Vision" jumbo jet[8]. By the early 2000s, Sony held the leading global share of the CCD market, but rising demand for high-definition video exposed limitations in readout speed[9].

Transition to CMOS

Development of complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors began in 1996. Sony's first CMOS sensor, the IMX001, was commercialized in 2000 and used in the AIBO entertainment robot. In 2004, the company made the strategic decision to halt further investment in CCDs and concentrate exclusively on CMOS technology to meet the demands of HD video.

Establishment of Sony Semiconductor Solutions

On November 9, 2015, Sony spun off its semiconductor business to create Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS), with Sony LSI Design Inc. as a subsidiary[10]. It started operating in April 1, 2016. Manufacturing operations were placed under the newly renamed Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation. The reorganization formed the Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group (SSS Group), with approximately 3,300 employees at launch, aimed at accelerating growth in image sensors by granting greater operational agility.

Under the SSS Group, the company has continued to innovate across image sensors for smartphones, automotive, security, industrial, and medical applications. It expanded into specialized sensing technologies such as short-wave infrared (SWIR), time-of-flight (ToF), event-based vision, and intelligent sensors with integrated AI. Production capacity grew through new fabrication facilities and partnerships, including the acquisition of Toshiba's Oita wafer line[11].

On May 8, 2026, Sony and TSMC signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to form a joint-venture for next-generation sensors.[12]
