Slow Time Records is an independent New Zealand record label founded by singer-songwriter Nadia Reid and based in Port Chalmers, Dunedin. Established around 2019 as a vehicle for Reid's own New Zealand releases, the label has since expanded into a small roster of artists connected to Reid and to Ōtepoti/Dunedin, including Anthonie Tonnon, Ebony Lamb, and The Broken Heartbreakers.
History
[edit]Reid launched Slow Time Records to release her third studio album, Out of My Province, in New Zealand in March 2020, while the album's international release was handled by Spacebomb Records.[1] Reid has said she had "always dreamed of starting a label in New Zealand" after years of working as a DIY musician, and described wanting the label to grow into "a stable of like-minded artists – artists I have a connection with, admire, and who also have a tie to Ōtepoti Dunedin."[2]
The label's first release by an artist other than Reid herself was singer-songwriter Anthonie Tonnon's third studio album, Leave Love Out Of This, produced with Jonathan Pearce of The Beths. The album was released by Slow Time Records in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Europe in July 2021, with Misra Records handling its North American release and Flippin' Yeah Records its release in Australia.[2] Leave Love Out Of This went on to win the 2022 Taite Music Prize, New Zealand's award for the best album released the previous year, and was also nominated for Best Alternative Artist at the Aotearoa Music Awards and for the APRA Silver Scroll Top 5.[3][4]
Slow Time subsequently signed Wellington-based singer-songwriter and photographer Ebony Lamb, formerly of alt-country band Eb & Sparrow, releasing her self-titled debut solo album on 20 October 2023.[5] Reid, who has known Lamb for over a decade, said she was "proud Slow Time is adding Ebony Lamb to the stable and releasing her music out to the world."[6]
In February 2025, the label released Reid's own fourth studio album, Enter Now Brightness, in New Zealand, with Chrysalis Records handling its release for the rest of the world.[7]
In 2026, Dunedin indie-folk band The Broken Heartbreakers, led by songwriters Rachel Bailey and John Howell, signed to Slow Time Records, releasing their fifth studio album, Imagine If We Could Just Keep Driving, on 17 July 2026, their first album in over a decade and the label's first signing outside Reid's immediate circle of solo artists.[8] Announcing the signing, Reid said: "Rachel and John are such gifted writers, observers, singers, and players... I'm so grateful that this record is joining Slow Time's stable of records."[8]
