Comment: Not only the sourcing, but "the downfall" and "slow revival"? These are not the most appropriate headings in Wikipedia. Nor do I see much notability in this specific ski area. HwyNerd Mike (t | c) 02:56, 14 December 2025 (UTC)

Ski Maple Valley
[edit]Ski Maple Valley was a ski area located in Dummerston, Vermont, United States. The ski area operated from 1963 until 2000 and featured a vertical drop of approximately 1,000 feet (300 m). At its peak, the area operated two double chairlifts, a T-bar, and multiple alpine ski trails.[1]
In 2018, the property was purchased by Sugar Mountain Holdings, LLC for US$745,000.[2]
History
[edit]Development of Maple Valley Ski Area began in the early 1960s on former farmland along Vermont Route 30. Maple Valley Ski Area, Inc. was incorporated in May 1963, and the ski area opened during the 1963–64 season.[3]
The original facilities included a Hall double chairlift, a T-bar, five ski trails, and 25-meter and 45-meter ski jumps.[4] During the following decades, the ski area expanded its trail network and facilities, serving skiers from southern Vermont and neighboring communities.[5]
Decline and Closure
[edit]Like many small ski areas in New England, Maple Valley faced financial challenges during the 1970s and 1980s. Contemporary accounts cited inconsistent snowfall, rising operating costs, and competition from larger destination resorts as contributing factors.[6]
In June 1989, the approximately 370-acre property was sold through a satellite auction for about US$1.2 million.[7]
Following a foreclosure auction in 1997, the ski area briefly reopened for skiing and snow tubing during the 1999–2000 season before ceasing operations.[8][9]
Redevelopment Efforts
[edit]In 2011, owner Nicholas Mercede proposed converting the property into a year-round recreation destination with activities such as mountain biking and events. The proposal was later withdrawn after concerns were raised during the local review process.[10]
In May 2018, Sugar Mountain Holdings, LLC acquired the property.[11] Subsequent plans focused on redevelopment of the lodge and year-round uses for the property. Representatives of the ownership group stated that restoration of skiing would require substantial investment because the former snowmaking and lift infrastructure could not readily be returned to service.[12]
