Sid Shanti is a British DJ, record producer, music journalist, chef and author. During the 1990s he was associated with the British Goa trance and psychedelic-trance scenes, including the London club events Return to the Source and Science Fiction. He later established a culinary career in Ibiza, where his work has included restaurant and private-chef projects, food writing, publishing and the Ibiza Chili Co food brand.[1][2][3]
Music career
[edit]Shanti became involved in the London trance scene during the first half of the 1990s. In May 1995, coverage in El País and its Tentaciones supplement documented his appearance in the Primavera Techno Sound programme at Sala Nitsa in Barcelona.[4] The following month, a listing in The Independent named him among the DJs appearing at a Return to the Source event at the Marcus Garvey Centre in Nottingham.[5]
In 1996, Shanti was the subject of a dedicated profile in The Big Issue Weekly. The article discussed his work as a trance DJ and his associations with Return to the Source, Science Fiction and Celtic Records.[1] He was also interviewed and photographed for a Mixmag feature about Return to the Source and Science Fiction.[6] The Guardian reported his appearance at Trance Central in Manchester with Tristan and Han Solo.[7]
Shanti was associated with the Science Fiction psychedelic-trance nights at The Fridge in Brixton. Contemporary event material places him at Science Fiction events there in April and June 1996, alongside performers including Astral Projection, O.O.O.D., Dino Psaras and Chris Organic.[8] The events later moved to Cloud 9 in Vauxhall.[9]
His performances during this period included appearances in continental Europe, South Africa, Japan, Australia and the United States. In November 1996, the South African newspaper Mail & Guardian reported that an upcoming Critical Mass rave in Cape Town would feature Shanti.[10] Surviving programmes document subsequent appearances at Boom Festival in Portugal in 1997, Teknodelia in Tokyo in 1997, Futura '98 at Yokohama Bay Hall and Return to the Source events in New York and Dallas.[11]
In a 1998 interview published by The Independent, Howard Marks named Shanti among the contemporary DJs and producers whose work he particularly liked.[12]
Music journalism and recordings
[edit]Shanti wrote trance record reviews for Update during the 1990s.[13] In May 1998, Music Week described him as a trance DJ and Mixmag journalist in a review of the compilation Journeys into Trance.[14]
His recording credits include releases for Celtic Records and Phantasm Records. The Celtic Records release Planet X / Another Planet was credited as written and produced by Lunar Asylum with Sid Shanti.[15] Deedrah's Reveraze / Sleeping Beauty included an additional-production credit for Shanti.[16] He was also jointly credited with Jean Borelli for writing and producing “Project Oblivion” on the Conspiracy Theory release Project Oblivion / Aural Focus.[17] Shanti also mixed Deck Wizards Volume 3: Aural Sect and Journeys into Trance.[1][18]
Ibiza and culinary career
[edit]Shanti's association with Ibiza began through his music career. Noudiari reported that he travelled to the island to perform for Manumission at Privilege Ibiza during the late 1990s and subsequently combined DJ work with cooking.[2] A 1999 Manumission programme advertised a rooftop food area called “Sid's Shanti Town”.[19]
According to Noudiari, Shanti later directed the kitchen at the Manumission Diner, opened the Ibiza restaurant El Faraón in 2004 and subsequently worked as a private chef.[2] A retrospective feature in Ibiza Spotlight reported that he operated El Faraón from 2004 to 2007 and also discussed his Manumission and Shanti Town work.[20]
In 2013, Shanti published Glorious Ibiza Food (& Music!), a bilingual book combining recipes with material about Ibiza's culinary traditions, farms, food producers and music culture.[2][20] The book was launched at Atzaró in Ibiza in May 2013.[20]
In 2016, he wrote a series of bylined articles for Ibiza Style about local food and culinary traditions. Subjects included spearfishing, farms and food producers, wild Ibizan rabbit and Café Caleta.[21][22][23][24][25]
Food products and hospitality work
[edit]Shanti founded Ibiza Chili Co, which produced sauces using chillies grown on Ibiza. In a 2017 feature, Savour Magazine reported that the business grew approximately 600 chilli plants across two farms, used four varieties and produced its sauces on the island.[3] The development and packaging of the range were also covered by the design publication The Dieline.[26]
A 2016 profile in Sphere reported that Shanti had developed a chocolate range that included hierbas-filled truffles, dark-chocolate thins with Ibizan sea salt and chilli chocolates.[27]
Shanti continued to undertake hospitality work connected with Ibiza. Bar Magazine reported that he prepared food pairings for a drinks-industry visit in 2017,[28] while The Spirits Business reported a cooking masterclass involving Shanti in 2018.[29]
