Sébastien Perrier

Sébastien Perrier is a French chemist and academic known for his contributions to polymer chemistry, specifically in the field of Reversible Addition−Fragmentation chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization and macromolecular engineering. He currently holds the Monash-Warwick Chair in Polymer Chemistry,[1] a joint appointment between the University of Warwick (UK) and Monash University (Australia).

His research focuses on the precision synthesis of polymers for applications in nanomedicine, materials science, and supramolecular chemistry.[2]

Biography

Perrier was born in Saint-Malo, France, in 1974. His early schooling years (Collège Jules Vallès and Lycée Charles et Adrien Dupuy ) were spent in Le Puy-en-Velay, before moving to Grenoble to study in a Classe Préparatoire. After passing the entrance exam for Grande Ecole, he moved to the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier, and graduated in 1998 with a Diplôme d'Ingénieur. He subsequently moved to the United Kingdom to undertake doctoral studies at the University of Warwick under the supervision of Professor David Haddleton. He obtained his PhD in polymer chemistry in 2002, working on copper mediated living radical polymerisation in polar media. Following his PhD, Perrier spent one year as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of New South Wales(UNSW) in Australia, working in the Centre for Advanced Macromolecular Design with Professor Tom Davis on RAFT polymerisation.

Perrier was Associated Editor of the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Polymer Chemistry,[3] and is currently the deputy editor of ACS Polymers Au, an open access journal in polymer science.[4]

He is a keen martial artist, holding a black belt in Karate and a Second Dan in ITF Taekwondo, acting as assistant instructor in his club Warwick Leamington Taekwondo.[5]

Academic Career

Perrier began his independent academic career in 2002 when he was appointed as a Lecturer at the University of Leeds in the Department of Colour and Polymer Chemistry. He was later promoted to Senior Lecturer.

In October 2007, he moved to the University of Sydney as a Professor and served as the Director of the Key Centre for Polymers and Colloids. During his time in Australia, he played a significant role in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI), serving as Chair of the Polymer Division in 2011.

In 2013, Perrier was appointed to the Monash-Warwick Alliance Chair in Polymer Chemistry, a joint appointment between the Department of Chemistry[6] and Warwick Medical School[7] at the University of Warwick, and the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Monash University.

Research

Perrier’s research group investigates the synthesis of functional nanostructured materials via macromolecular engineering. His work is highly interdisciplinary, combining organic chemistry, polymer physics, and biomedical science. His research focuses on polymerisation systems, specifically Reversible Addition−Fragmentation chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization, which he has contributed to develop by developing methodologies to create well-defined block copolymers and functionalized macromolecules. He authored a widely cited "User Guide" to RAFT polymerization published in Macromolecules.[8] His research also covers Supramolecular Polymers, in partciular the self-assembly of cyclic peptides to form nanotubular structures, with potential applications in drug delivery and membrane transport.[9] A significant portion of his current work focuses on Nanomedicine, designing polymer nanoparticles for therapeutic delivery. This includes the development of antimicrobial polymers and vectors for drug and gene delivery.
