Samu/elle Striewski is a German non-binary LGBTQ+ activist, writer, and drag performer. In 2023, they were elected as a Rhodes Scholar and began a master's degree in political theory at the University of Oxford the following year, where they are now an incoming doctoral student.[1][2][3]

Early life and education

Striewski grew up in Wuppertal and attended the Carl-Fuhlrott-Gymnasium.[1][4] At school, they served as student spokesperson and engaged in work against discrimination.[1][5] They also participated in Wuppertal's Youth Council during this period.[1][6][7] In 2018, they completed their Abitur.[1][8]

Afterwards, Striewski studied mathematics, philosophy, and comparative literature in Berlin, Paris, and New York City.[1][2] Following an exchange at Columbia University, they returned to Germany to continue their studies in philosophy in Berlin and Frankfurt.[1][2] From 2023, they also worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Social Critique, directed by Rahel Jaeggi.[9][10]

Activism

Striewski has engaged in LGBTQ+ activism, particularly on bi+ and trans rights.[4][2] In 2024, the Wuppertaler Rundschau reported that Striewski was a board member of BiNe – Bisexuelles Netzwerk, a German network for the bi+ community.[4] In 2025, they represented BiNe at the founding meeting of Bi+ Equal, the first pan-European bi+ organization.[11][12][13] Since early 2026, Striewski has served on the executive board of IGLYO, an international LGBTQI youth organization based in Brussels.[3][14] They continue to be engaged in trans activist projects in Germany, for example in collaboration with the Queer Institute in Berlin.[15][16][17]

Writing and publications

Striewski's academic and public-facing writing addresses questions related to queer and trans studies, as well as critical theory more broadly.[18][19][20] They have also contributed features, commentary, reviews, and interviews to various queer and left outlets (Der Freitag, Siegessäule, Missy Magazine) and are managing editor of the Oxford Political Review.[21][22][23][24][25][26]

Together with Jenny Schrödl, they co-edited Drag, hier und heute! Zur Vielfalt von queeren Geschlechterinszenierungen in der Gegenwart, a volume on contemporary drag in German-speaking contexts which is scheduled for publication with Neofelis at the end of October 2026.[27]
