Rob Bliss is an American filmmaker whose work spans public events, viral short films, and documentary filmmaking. He began organizing social-media-driven public events in Grand Rapids, Michigan.[1] He later moved into feature documentary work, including White Man Walking.[2]

Early life

[edit]

Bliss grew up in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area. He graduated from Forest Hills Central High School. A 2009 profile traced his interest in organizing large public gatherings to activities he staged while still in school and later in downtown Grand Rapids.[1][3]

Career

[edit]

Grand Rapids public events

[edit]

Beginning in 2008, Bliss organized public events in Grand Rapids that were promoted through social media. These included a pillow fight at Rosa Parks Circle,[1] a zombie walk with an estimated 8,000 participants,[3] a public sidewalk chalk event,[4] and the 100,000 Paper Airplanes performance.[5] In August 2010, he organized a 500-foot inflatable waterslide down Lyon Street.[6][7]

A New York Times report described the waterslide as one of about a dozen public events Bliss had organized and promoted through Facebook. The newspaper reported that attendance at these events ranged from dozens to thousands of people.[6] CBS News Detroit later reported that several of the events attracted crowds in the thousands.[8]

In 2014, FOX 17 reported that Bliss owed more than $11,000 in event-related costs to the city of Grand Rapids. An Associated Press report in 2015 stated that the balance had been paid through monthly payments and in-kind services.[9][10]

Film and television work

[edit]

In 2011, Bliss created the "Grand Rapids LipDub", a citywide single-take video set to Don McLean's "American Pie", featuring residents, performers, local officials, and city services.[11][12][13] Film critic Roger Ebert described the video as "the greatest music video ever made."[14]

Michigan Public reported that at least 1,000 participants took part in the continuous, unedited production, which was filmed across downtown Grand Rapids.[12]

In 2013, Bliss directed Homeless Veteran Timelapse Transformation, which followed a homeless U.S. Army veteran through a physical makeover and other assistance.[15] The video received more than 10 million views within five days of its release.[16] In 2014, Bliss directed 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman in collaboration with anti-harassment organization Hollaback!. Actress Shoshana Roberts appeared in the film, which documented her walking through New York City and the street harassment she encountered.[17][18]

By December 2014, The Guardian reported that 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman had received 37.5 million views and that YouTube culture head Kevin Allocca said it had generated hundreds of parodies.[19] PBS NewsHour reported that the video drew attention to the issue of street harassment.[20]

In 2015, performer Shoshana Roberts filed a lawsuit against Hollaback! and Bliss.[21] In January 2017, U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams dismissed the federal Lanham Act claim, dismissed the remaining state-law claims without prejudice, and closed the federal case.[22]

Other projects included Christmas Surprise Traffic Stop (2014), Who Will Stop the Bullying? (2015), and The Other Christmas Gift (2015).[23][24][25]

In 2017, Bliss hosted the six-episode television series Blissful Thinking, released on Hulu and through Verizon's go90 platform.[26] The series featured Bliss conducting social experiments in New York City on subjects including prejudice, sexism, mental health, and economic inequality. One episode included the Man Tax, a SoHo pharmacy installation examining gender-based price disparities.[27][28]

In 2018, Bliss created and produced the staged social experiment The Tinder Trap. The project involved model Natasha Aponte and a Tinder profile used to arrange simultaneous dates with hundreds of men who expected to meet Aponte individually at Union Square Park.[29] Those who attended instead encountered a filmed dating competition.[30] Bliss told CBS News that the project was intended to recreate in person the superficial judgments people make when using dating apps.[29]

Documentaries

[edit]

In 2020, Bliss filmed a social experiment in Harrison, Arkansas, titled Holding a Black Lives Matter Sign in America's Most Racist Town. The film showed Bliss standing in public with a Black Lives Matter placard while reactions from passing residents and drivers were recorded, including racist comments.[31][32]

The Washington Post reported that Bliss filmed in Harrison over three days using a GoPro concealed through his shirt. Bliss told the newspaper that he chose Harrison because he believed many Black Lives Matter protests were "preaching to the choir" and wanted the conversation to occur in places where support was less expected.[31]

The Harrison project later became the basis for the documentary film White Man Walking. In 2020, Bliss spent 60 days walking roughly 1,500 miles through parts of the American South in a Black Lives Matter T-shirt, filming encounters and conversations along the route.[2] The finished documentary premiered as part of BBC Storyville and was later acquired by ARTE for broadcasting in France and Germany.[33] In 2025, photographer and filmmaker Misan Harriman joined the project as an executive producer,[34] and in 2026, Watermelon Pictures acquired the documentary's North American rights.[35]

World Screen reported that White Man Walking was co-directed by Bliss and Denise Alder and commissioned for BBC Storyville.[33]
