Richard Golding (London, 1949) is a British executive and businessman based in Spain. He has held senior management and corporate governance positions at companies including Cadbury Schweppes, RJR Nabisco, Dorna Sports, Parques Reunidos, Grupo DIA, Grupo Donte and Grupo Mémora. He is the founder and chairman of Bodega Tesalia, in Arcos de la Frontera, Cádiz.

Early life and education

Golding was born in London in 1949. He studied Business Administration at London Thames University (now the University of West London). In the mid-1970s he moved to Spain as Marketing Director of Schweppes España.[1][2]

Career

Cadbury Schweppes

During his time at Schweppes España, Golding was involved in the development of the advertising campaign «Aprenda a amar la tónica» (Learn to love tonic), launched in the late 1970s. Various publications have noted that the campaign contributed to a significant increase in the brand's sales in Spain.[1][2]

RJR Nabisco

Golding subsequently held senior management positions at RJR Nabisco, where he served as president of the tobacco business and part of the food business for Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Andorra and the United Kingdom.[3]

Dorna Promoción del Deporte

Golding served as Chief Executive of Dorna Promoción del Deporte and Two Wheel Promotion.[3] Dorna Promoción del Deporte was the company that gave rise to Dorna Sports, a sports rights management company which has held the commercial rights to the MotoGP World Championship since 1992.[4][5]

Parques Reunidos

Golding served as a board member and Chief Executive of Parques Reunidos from 2003 to February 2014.[6][7] In 2003, Golding led alongside Advent International a management buy-in that resulted in Spain's first-ever public-to-private transaction completed by a private equity firm, delisting the company from the Madrid Stock Exchange at an enterprise value of approximately €226 million.[8][9] During that period, the company grew from fifteen venues in Spain to over sixty parks across fourteen countries. In 2007, Advent International sold Parques Reunidos to Candover Investments for over €900 million.[10]

In July 2018, Parques Reunidos announced Golding's appointment as non-executive Chairman of the Board.[6][11]

Grupo DIA

Golding joined the board of directors of Grupo DIA at the time of the company's stock market flotation in 2011.[3][12] In March 2017 he was appointed First Non-Executive Vice-Chairman of the Board.[13]

Grupo Mémora

Golding served as Chairman of Grupo Mémora, the leading funeral services company in Spain, backed by British private equity firm 3i Group, which had acquired the company in 2008 for €187 million.[6][14] In 2017, 3i Group sold its stake in Mémora to Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan in a transaction that valued the company at approximately €450 million.[15]

Grupo Donte

Golding served as Non-Executive Chairman of Grupo Donte, the parent company of Vitaldent, a dental clinic group operating across Spain. Advent International had acquired the group in 2019 for €350 million. In 2025, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan acquired Grupo Donte from Advent International for over €1 billion.[16] In April 2026 he was succeeded as non-executive chairman by Emilio Saracho.[17]

Bodega Tesalia

In 2008 Golding founded Bodega Tesalia together with his family in Arcos de la Frontera, Cádiz, on an estate in the Cádiz mountain range.[1][18] The project was conceived from the outset with a strategy of anticipating climate change, through the selection of rootstocks, long-cycle varieties and pergola training structures designed to maintain freshness and balance in the wines under conditions of extreme heat. The winery produces red wines from varieties including petit verdot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and the indigenous tintilla de Rota grape.[19][20]

Its wines have been reviewed in specialist guides and publications including Vinous Media, James Suckling, Jancis Robinson, Tim Atkin, the Decanter World Wine Awards, Guía Peñín, Guía Proensa and Wine-Searcher.[21][22][23] The 2019 Tesalia vintage was named best wine in Andalusia at the Premios T del Vino awards by Tapas magazine.[24]

Equestrian activity

Golding has been involved in breeding sport horses in Andalusia. One of the horses bred at his stud, Jarlin de Torres, competed with rider Manuel Fernández Saro representing the Spanish national team at the European Championships in 2021 (Riesenbeck, Germany) and 2023 (Milan, Italy) and at the World Championships in 2022 (Herning, Denmark). The horse was subsequently acquired by the United Arab Emirates, representing that country at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games ridden by Ali Hamad Al Kirbi in the show jumping discipline.[25][26][27]
