Rehendhi School (ރެހެނދި ސްކޫލް) is a public government school located on Boganvilla Magu in Hulhumalé, Maldives. Established on 20 September 2014, it operates under the Ministry of Education. Operating under the motto "Learn for Life", the school serves over 2,400 students from primary through secondary grade levels, making it one of the largest educational institutions in the area.[1]
History
[edit]Rehendhi School was named in honor of Sultana Khadija Rehendhi Kanbaidhi, a 14th-century monarch who ruled the nation across three separate reigns totaling 16 years.[1] It is the first school in the Maldives to be named after a historical female leader.[1]
The construction of the school was funded by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) at a cost of MVR 104 million and contracted to AMIN Construction.[2] The school opened on 20 September 2015 with an initial enrollment of over 2,000 students and 128 staff members.[1] To accommodate growing student enrollment in Hulhumalé, the school converted to a double-session format in 2016.[1] By 2025, student enrollment had expanded to 2,416 students supported by 196 staff members.[1]
Campus and facilities
[edit]The school building is a five-story complex split into three blocks, equipped with 1 elevator per block.[2] The structure incorporates universal accessibility features, including access ramps for wheelchair users, emergency exit pathways, and open-floor recess areas on each floor.[2]
Facilities include:
- Classrooms: 44 standard instructional classrooms.
- Laboratories: A computer laboratory for information technology classes, a vocational laboratory equipped for practical skills training (such as carpentry and tailoring), and dedicated resource rooms.
- Assemblies and Events: A multipurpose hall used for sports, assemblies, and cultural events, as well as a seminar room equipped with audiovisual systems.
- Administrative and Support Spaces: A school library holding academic texts and reading materials, a staffroom, an administrative office, a prayer room, a meeting room, and designated spaces for extracurricular clubs.[1][2]
House system
[edit]Students at Rehendhi School are divided into four houses, designated by name and color:
- Raadha (Red)
- Rani (Green)
- Kambaidhi (Orange)
- Abaarana (Purple)
Student governance
[edit]Student leadership consists of two primary governing bodies:
Student Council
[edit]The Student Council manages school activities, organizes events, and represents the school at public forums. Positions include:
- School Captain and two Deputy Captains (Male and Female)
- Activity Captain and two Deputy Activity Captains (Male and Female)
- House Captains and Deputy House Captains
- Uniformed Group Leaders and Deputies (Scouts, Cadets, Girl Guides, and Band)
- Club Executives (Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Secretaries)
Selection to the council uses a weighted system where student academic and participation records account for 60% of the evaluation, with the remaining 40% decided by a student vote under a modified first-past-the-post system.
Prefect Board
[edit]The Prefect Board consists of student prefects selected based on academic performance, discipline, and grade point average. Prefects assist with school discipline and event organization.
Values and philosophy
[edit]The school's motto is "Learn for Life." Its educational mission emphasizes:
- Islamic Foundation: Developing character aligned with Islamic principles.
- National Identity: Fostering respect for Maldivian heritage and cultural history.
- Personal Growth: Encouraging civic responsibility, self-confidence, competence, and lifelong learning.
Extracurricular activities
[edit]Rehendhi School operates several uniformed co-curricular groups, including the 29th Male Scout Group, a Cadet Corps, a Girl Guide unit, and a Student Traffic Monitor program.
Students represent the school in national and inter-school sports competitions—including football, netball, chess, and swimming—as well as national Quran recitation and Dhivehi literature and oratory contests.
