Ramesh Richard is an Indian-American evangelical preacher, theologian, author, and founder of RREACH (Ramesh Richard Evangelism and Church Health).[1] Richard serves as professor of pastoral ministries and global proclamation at Dallas Theological Seminary and is known internationally for his preaching ministry, pastoral training initiatives, and leadership development efforts among evangelical churches worldwide.[2][3]

Early life and education

Richard was born and raised in India, where he began preaching as a teenager in church youth groups and public marketplaces.[1] His early ministry experience included participation in a Youth for Christ “Teen Team” that traveled to neighboring countries for evangelistic outreach.[1]

In 1975, Richard moved to the United States to pursue theological education at Multnomah School of the Bible before transferring to Dallas Theological Seminary on scholarship.[1] He graduated with a Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) degree in 1982.[1]

From 1983 to 1987, Richard served as pastor of Delhi Bible Fellowship in New Delhi, India, while also pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Delhi.[1] During this period, he expanded his itinerant preaching ministry internationally[1] and organized evangelistic preaching events and leadership conferences across Asia and beyond.[1] In 1991, he addressed the Maramon Convention in Kerala, India, where organizers reported attendance exceeding 100,000 people.[1]

Dallas Theological Seminary

In 1987, Richard joined the faculty at Dallas Theological Seminary.[2] He became professor of pastoral ministries and global proclamation.[2] His teaching and ministry work emphasized expository preaching, evangelism, and leadership development among pastors in the Global South.[2] In 2005, Richard partnered with DTS to launch the Global Proclamation Academy to "equip influential young pastors from all over the world to preach, live, and think biblically."[2] In 2016, he convened the first Global Proclamation Congress for Pastoral Trainers in Bangkok, Thailand, followed by the second Global Proclamation Congress for Trainers of Pastors in Panama City, Panama in 2023.[2] Richard is currently Professor of Global Theological Engagement and Pastoral Ministries at DTS.[2]

Founding of RREACH

In 1987, RREACH International was established to support and organize Richard’s expanding ministry activities.[2] The organization focused on evangelism, media outreach, and pastoral training initiatives around the world.[1]

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Richard expanded RREACH’s international activities through preaching campaigns, leadership summits, radio broadcasts, and educational initiatives.[1] In 1995, the ministry launched Reach for Life, a radio program distributed across parts of Asia and Africa.[1] RREACH's mission is to implement "God’s calling and gifting on Ramesh Richard to promote the Lord Jesus Christ worldwide."[4] REACH's vision is to "change the way One Billion Individuals think and hear about the Lord Jesus Christ, to the glory of the Father and by the power of the Holy Spirit."[4]

Pastoral training initiatives

Richard is associated with several global pastoral training initiatives.[1] Between 1997 and 2000, he helped establish the Trainers of Pastors International Coalition (TOPIC), an effort to connect organizations involved in pastoral education worldwide.[1]

In 2005, Richard launched the Global Proclamation Academy (GPA), a leadership development program for younger pastors hosted at Dallas Theological Seminary.[1] The program later expanded internationally through regional academies in multiple countries.[1]

In 2016, Richard organized the Global Proclamation Congress for Pastoral Trainers in Bangkok, Thailand.[2] According to organizers the congress brought together more than 2,500 pastoral trainers from over 100 countries.[1]

Public speaking and international engagement

Richard has spoken at international religious and civic gatherings, including the African Union Heads of State Prayer Breakfast in Khartoum, Sudan, in 2006.[2] In 2008, he delivered the keynote address at the United Nations International Prayer Breakfast in New York City.[1][5]

His ministry has particularly emphasized outreach to political, business, and cultural leaders, which Richard has described as evangelizing “opinion leaders.”[4]

Writings

Richard has authored books and preaching resources focused on expository preaching and pastoral ministry.[1] His work Scripture Sculpture, later republished as Preparing Expository Sermons, became widely used in evangelical pastoral training contexts.[1] Preaching magazine listed the book among the most influential preaching books of the previous 25 years.[1]

Personal life

Richard is married to Bonnie Richard.[1] The couple have three children, and three grandchildren.[2] Together, they have been involved in international ministry activities through RREACH and related initiatives.[1]

Preparing Expository Sermons presents a structured seven-step method for sermon preparation and has been used in pastoral training contexts globally.

In a published review, the book was described as “a good introduction” to sermon development while noting both strengths and limitations in its methodology.[6]
