Pt. Samit Kumar Mallick is an Indian classical vocalist specializing in the ancient Dhrupad genre of Hindustani classical music. He is a prominent exponent of the Darbhanga Dhrupad Gharana and represents the 13th generation of this illustrious musical lineage. Known for his mastery over the Khandarvani and Gauharvani styles of Dhrupad, Pt. Mallick is a designated 'Top Grade' Artist of All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan.[1]
Throughout his career, Pt. Mallick has earned several major national recognitions and accolades. Early in his career, he won first prize in the All India Radio National Music Competition for Dhrupad, receiving the Gold Medal (President’s Award) in 2004, and was awarded the National Scholarship (2004–2005) by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. In 2008, he was conferred the 'Surmani' title at the 47th Kal-ke-Kalakar Sangeet Sammelan by Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai. In 2022, he was awarded the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Government of India, recognizing his contributions to the preservation and performance of Dhrupad music.[2][3][4][5][6]
Early Life
[edit]Pt. Samit Kumar Mallick was born on December 7, 1983, in Darbhanga, Bihar. He began his musical apprenticeship in early childhood through the traditional ''guru-shishya parampara'' under the guidance of his father and guru, Padma Shri Pandit Ram Kumar Mallick. He also received training from his grandfather, Dhrupad maestro Pandit Vidur Mallick, and his uncle Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick.[7]
From an early age, his training emphasized foundational vocal discipline, including breath control (pranayama), precise intonation (swara shuddhi), and complex rhythmic improvisation (layakari) set to traditional talas such as Chautala, Dhamar, Sultala, and Tivra. In 2003, he secured first position at the AIU National Youth Festival in Delhi, marking his early emergence in the national classical music circuit.[8]
Musical Lineage: The Darbhanga Gharana

Samit Kumar Mallick belongs to the Mallick family of Amta (Darbhanga district, Bihar), a classical musical lineage historically patronized by the Royal Court of the Maharaja of Darbhanga (Raj Darbhanga). The Darbhanga Gharana is recognized as one of the four major surviving traditions (bani branches) of Dhrupad in India, alongside the Dagar, Bettiah, and Bishnupur gharanas.[7]
The roots of the Darbhanga gharana extend to the mid-18th century through the brothers Pandit Radhakrishna Mallick and Pandit Kartaram Mallick. Around 1745, both brothers began 30 years of rigorous Dhrupad training under Ustad Bhupat Khan 'Maharang'[9], a master linked to Tansen's musical lineage in the court of Awadh's Nawab, Shuja-ud-Daula. Following a performance at the Nawab's court, Maharaja Darbar Singh of Darbhanga heard them and invited them to become court musicians, establishing the royal patronage of Raj Darbhanga for their tradition.[10][11][12]
Over thirteen successive generations, the lineage has preserved hundreds of traditional bandishes (compositions) and pedagogical techniques passed down through guru-shishya parampara. Prominent ancestral figures and stalwarts of this tradition include Pt. Kshitipal Mallick, Pt. Sukhdev Mallick, Padma Shri Pt. Ram Chatur Mallick, Pt. Siyaram Tiwari, Pt. Vidur Mallick, Pt. Abhay Narayan Mallick, Padma Shri Pt. Ram Kumar Mallick, and Pt. Prem Kumar Mallick. Pt. Ramchatur Mallick along with the Dagar Brothers, made a huge contribution to revive, enrich and propagate Dhrupad in recent times.[11][13][14]
Education and Academic Work
[edit]Alongside his traditional training under the guru-shishya parampara, Pt. Samit Kumar Mallick pursued formal academic qualifications in musicology and Hindustani classical music. He earned his Master of Arts (M.A.) in Music with distinction, specializing in vocal performance and music theory. In 2014, he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Music by Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU), Darbhanga, for his doctoral research on the contribution of Musicians of Darbhanga Gharana (With Special Reference to Raga Delineation and Presentation).[15]
His academic research focuses on the musicological documentation and preservation of rare classical bandishes (compositions) attributed to medieval poet-musicians, including Tansen, Baiju Bawra, and Swami Haridas. Additionally, his scholarly work explores the classical musicological frameworks of 14th-century devotional Vidyapati Geet set to traditional ragas.
Musical Style

The vocal style of Pt. Samit Kumar Mallick synthesizes the core aesthetic traditions of the Darbhanga Gharana, balancing melodic restraint with forceful rhythmic expression. The Darbhanga Gharana is globally distinguished in Dhrupad by its synthesis of two primary banis—employing serene Gauharvani for smooth glides (meend) and sustained notes during the Alap, and forceful Khandarvani for heavy gamaks and crisp articulation throughout the Jor, Jhala, and Bandish. Grounded in traditional vocal breath control (pranayama), Pt. Mallick’s singing features a deep, open-throated (Akar) vocal technique spanning three full octaves (Mandra, Madhya, and Tara), with a strong emphasis on swara purity and precise textual pronunciation (Uchcharan).[16]
In contrast to traditions that prioritize an extended Alap, Pt. Mallick maintains equal balance between the Alap-Jor-Jhala phase and the Bandish (fixed composition). The Alap establishes the emotional atmosphere (rasa) using sacred nom-tom syllables derived from Sanskrit mantras ("Om Shri Narayana Anant Hari Om"). A defining hallmark of his performances is advanced layakari (rhythmic improvisation), where he executes seamless transitions across standard and micro-fractional tempos—such as Dugun, Tigun, Chaugun , Athgun, Kuar, Biar, and Paun. These rhythmic permutations are often rendered alongside complex off-beat tihais and interactive sawal-jawab (question-and-answer) dialogues with the pakhawaj player before resolving back to the sam.[7]
Pt. Mallick's core Dhrupad and Dhamar repertoire encompasses ancient Sanskrit Stutis dedicated to Hindu deities alongside courtly and seasonal Braj Bhasha poetry by medieval masters such as Tansen, Baiju Bawra, and Swami Haridas preserved across generations of the Mallick family.[17] A distinct aspect of his performance tradition includes classical Dhrupad settings of 14th-century Maithili Vidyapati Pad. Beyond core Dhrupad, Pt. Mallick also demonstrates versatility across related classical and semi-classical vocal genres, performing Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, Bhajan, and Vidyapati Geet.[7]
Career

Samit Kumar Mallick performs as a solo Dhrupad vocalist in the Darbhanga gharana tradition, having previously presented frequent jugalbandi (duet) recitals alongside his father and guru, Padma Shri Pt. Ram Kumar Mallick[18][19][20]. He holds a 'Top Grade' artist classification with All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan, broadcasting regularly on national television and radio networks, including featured appearances on the National Programme of Music.
Throughout his performing career, Pt. Mallick has represented the Darbhanga lineage at major national classical music festivals and international venues, including a performance at the Darbar Music Festival in London in 2017[19]. His national concert appearances include the Tansen Sangeet Samaroh (Gwalior), Dhrupad Mela (Varanasi), SaMaPa Sangeet Sammelan (New Delhi)[21][22], All India Bhaskar Rao Sangeet Sammelan (Chandigarh), and Swami Haridas Sangeet Sammelan. He has also performed for recitals organized by apex cultural bodies, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi (such as the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Music Festival and Amrit Yuva Kalotsav), the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), and the Department of Art, Culture, and Youth, Government of Bihar.[23]
In addition to his performance career, Pt. Mallick is engaged in music pedagogy, training students in the vocal techniques and repertoire of the Darbhanga gharana. He also conducts cultural outreach programs through SPIC MACAY, presenting lecture-demonstrations and concert series across academic institutions in India.[12]
