Projeto Ladislau (also stylized as Projeto_Ladislau) is a Brazilian independent musical group formed in 1996 in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Originating from the Tristeza neighborhood in the South Zone of the state capital, the project began as a duo and later expanded into a trio in 2020. The band's musical identity is characterized by structural eclecticism, blending rap metrics with rock, reggae, ska, and electronic soundscapes.

Spanning several eras of underground music distribution, the group achieved early recognition in the late 1990s and early 2000s for its pioneering use of MP3.com to share digital tracks in Brazil, and has since maintained a prolific record of continuous digital releases and charity-driven independent productions.

History

Formation and early digital presence (1996–2000)

The group was founded in 1996 by school friends Jossiano "Jo" Leal and Felipe Rodrigues, both of whom were active musicians in the Porto Alegre independent nightlife circuit. During the rehearsal breaks of their respective side projects, the duo began experimenting with rap beats overlayed with improvised lyrics (freestyle rap). Influenced by American hip hop groups such as Run-D.M.C. and Beastie Boys, as well as local contemporary acts like Comunidade Nin-Jitsu, the duo decided to establish a permanent project dedicated entirely to original material.

In 1998, they independently recorded and released their first demo tape, featuring the single "Rap da Beleza". The track was entered into the traditional Porto Alegre Music Festival (Festival de Música de Porto Alegre), reaching the semi-finals in 1999. By 2000, at a time when virtual music distribution was still a novelty in the Brazilian market, Projeto Ladislau gained digital prominence by becoming one of the most downloaded independent acts from Porto Alegre on the global platform MP3.com, alongside regional bands such as Wonkavision, Video Hits, and Ultramen.

Festival circuit and ringtones (2001–2012)

In 2001, the group recorded the demo "Conexão Leopoldina", followed by another demo tape in 2002 featuring the tracks "Protesto" and "Blues do Amor". To bring their studio compositions to live stages, the duo collaborated with the now-defunct Gaucho band Prana as their backing group. This live ensemble allowed Projeto Ladislau to reach the semi-finals of the Porto Alegre Music Festival once more in 2002, repeating the feat in 2004, the same year they released the single "Para!".

The reach of their discography shifted toward emerging mobile technologies in 2007 when their track "Protesto" was chosen by the telecommunications company Claro for its nationwide "Demo Hits" project, converting the song into a commercially distributed mobile phone ringtone. In 2008, Continuing their stylistic fluidity, the duo released the single "Fiz Até Macumba", incorporating elements of charme and contemporary R&B.

Public funding and studio albums (2013–2019)

In 2013, Projeto Ladislau was selected as a beneficiary of the Fundo Municipal de Apoio à Produção Artística e Cultural (Fumproarte), a municipal arts grant program under the Porto Alegre Secretary of Culture, securing funding for their first full-length record. Recorded in the first half of 2014, their self-titled debut album compiled ten original tracks. It was manufactured in the physical SMD CD format and distributed across early major digital storefronts such as iTunes, Google Play, and CD Baby.

In 2015, the duo released electronic remixes under the sub-label Varzeano Mix and put out the singles "De boa" and "Pau de Selfie", the latter receiving attention on nationwide viral entertainment portals. That same year, to celebrate the 21st birthday of footballer Valdívia—then a standout player for Sport Club Internacional—the group composed and released the track "Pokopika", which went on to be featured across national sports news networks.

In 2016, the band launched a crowdfunding campaign on the Benfeitoria platform to fund their second album. In a social outreach effort, the group donated all the campaign proceeds directly to *101 Viralatas*, a non-profit non-governmental organization that rescues and cares for abandoned animals in the Greater Porto Alegre metro area. Preceded by four promotional singles, the album Numerodois was officially released in late 2017 in both CD and streaming formats, featuring an upbeat, melodic musical shift centered around reggae and ska.

Trio expansion and the singles era (2020–present)

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, plans for recording a traditional third studio album were halted. The group shifted their strategy toward a decentralized model, focusing on the frequent release of standalone digital singles directly to modern streaming platforms. Late that year, multi-instrumentalist Jordan Nunes officially joined the group, permanently expanding the long-standing duo into a trio.

This new studio dynamic modified the band's arrangement textures, adding synth structures to their standard guitar and bass arrangements. Between 2021 and 2022, the trio dropped ten consecutive singles and sustained this production rhythm over the following years, accumulating **over twenty independent singles** distributed globally, including tracks such as "Virou Paixão" and "Folhas Secas".
