Preeta Verma is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1991 batch belonging to the Bihar cadre. She has held several senior positions in the Bihar Police and the Government of India. In September 2026, she was given additional charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Bihar during the absence of the incumbent DGP. She became the first woman IPS officer to head the Bihar Police, serving as the acting DGP of Bihar. She is among the senior-most serving IPS officers of the Bihar cadre.[1][2][3][4]
Early life and education
[edit]Verma was born on 1 July 1968. According to the official Indian Police Service civil list, she is from Rajasthan and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was appointed to the Indian Police Service on 11 October 1992 as a member of the 1991 Bihar cadre.[5]
DGP of Bihar
[edit]In September 2026, Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar proceeded on leave. The state government assigned Verma additional charge of the DGP's office while continuing her existing responsibilities as Director General of Home Guards and Fire Services.
Following Kumar's voluntary retirement later that month, Verma continued to hold additional charge as acting DGP of Bihar pending appointment of a full-time state police chief. The New Indian Express reported that she was the first woman IPS officer to hold the post of acting DGP in Bihar.[4]
Awards and honours
[edit]In 2023, she was awarded the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service. The Ministry of Home Affairs' official list identifies her as DG (Training), Bihar, at the time of the award.[6][7]
