Po Choi
[edit]Po Choi (Choi Siu Tsun, Chinese: 蔡兆浚; born 1994) is a Hong Kong historian, poet, and editor at the Hong Kong Chronicles Institute, where he serves as Senior Editor and Head of the Economic Sector.[1][2]He is also a permanent member of the Hong Kong Archaeological Society.[3]
Biography
[edit]Choi graduated from Lingnan University with a Bachelor of Arts in History with First Class Honours, and subsequently obtained a Master of Philosophy degree in History. In July 2019, he joined the Hong Kong Chronicles Institute as one of its first editors, serving as one of the responsible editors for the inaugural volume, Hong Kong Chronicles: General Summary · Chronology of Events, where he was responsible for the ancient history section.[3]
He later led the compilation of the Place Names and Appendices sections, and is currently Head of the Economic Sector, overseeing the compilation of twelve volumes, including Aviation · Tourism, Economic Overview · Traditional Industries, Telecommunications · Professional Services, Land Policy and Planning, Commerce, Conglomerates, Reclamation and Public Works, and Urban Transport.[4]
Beyond his editorial work, Choi has published research on Hong Kong's ancient history, place names, and local history.[5] He traced the origins of Hong Kong's floating restaurants to the "geetong boats" (歌堂船) of Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta.[6] He also led the development of the "Hong Kong Natural Ten Scenic Spots" project,[7] which drew on the Qing-era "Eight Scenic Spots of Xin'an" from the Xin'an County Gazetteer, the 1930s–40s "Eight Scenic Spots of Hong Kong" and "Ten Scenic Spots of Hong Kong" to propose 100 candidate sites representing Hong Kong's natural landscape. After expert review and public voting, ten final sites were selected: High Island Rock Columns, Tai O Dragon Boat Parade, Tai Lam Reservoir Islands, Tai Mo Shan Sea of Clouds, Sharp Island Sandbar, Shing Mun Reservoir Mirror, White Mud Sunset, Tai Tong Autumn Leaves, Tung Ping Chau Cape, and Sunset Peak Silvergrass.[8] In 2024, Hongkong Post issued a set of commemorative stamps based on this selection.[9]
Choi also contributed to the compilation of popular publications such as Return: 25 Years of Sentiment and Justice, Soaring Ambition: A Century of Hong Kong Athletes' Journey, and More Than a Knight: Chevalier Group's 55-Year Journey. He also represented the Institute in the preparatory work for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Branch of the National Local Records Museum.[4]
Poet
[edit]Choi's poetry often engages with Hong Kong's history, place names, and personal experience. During the compilation of Hong Kong Chronicles: General Summary · Chronology of Events, he wrote over three hundred poems related to the subject matter.[10]
He published a series of poems titled Three Poems of Wanshan, accompanied by an extended preface tracing his family's migration from the Wanshan Archipelago to Sanzao Island, Macau, and ultimately Hong Kong, as well as oral accounts of his ancestors as "sea people" (海人).[11]
