Philippe Weiss (born 1973) is a Swiss mixing and recording engineer. He first became known for his mixing work in the French and Swiss hip-hop scenes, with credits including Ärsenik, Rohff, Oxmo Puccino, Kool Shen, Diam's, Sens Unik and Stress.[1][2]
His later work has spanned electronic music, pop, soul, jazz and alternative music. Selected international credits include Madonna, Black Coffee, the Alchemist, Earl Sweatshirt, Evidence, Big Sean, Charles Aznavour, Martin Solveig, Selah Sue, Erik Truffaz, Baloji, Bastian Baker and Sam Akpro. He contributed mixing to Black Coffee's 2021 album Subconsciously, which won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.[2]
Early life and training
[edit]Weiss was born in Lausanne in 1973. After studying electronics in Switzerland, he attended the School of Audio Engineering (SAE) in London from 1993 to 1995.[3][4]
He then moved to Paris and joined Studio Davout, initially working as an assistant engineer. His first assignment was a session with Sly and Robbie produced by Dennis Bovell. Over the following year, he gained experience on projects ranging from Red Hot Chili Peppers sessions to large-orchestra recordings.[4][5][6]
At Davout, Weiss met American recording and mixing engineer Tony Smalios, whom he has described as one of his important mentors. In 1997, he moved to New York to continue working and training with Smalios, returning to France around the turn of the decade.[6][4]
Career
[edit]French and Swiss hip hop
[edit]Weiss established his reputation during the late-1990s expansion of French and Swiss hip hop. One of his earliest mixes was Supernatural and Rockin' Squat's 1996 track "Undaground Connexion".[7] This was followed by work with artists including Ärsenik (Quelques gouttes suffisent...), Sens Unik (Pole Position), Rohff (La Vie avant la mort), Oxmo Puccino (Le Cactus de Sibérie), Kool Shen (Dernier Round), Diam's, Mac Tyer, MC Jean Gab'1, Pit Baccardi, Ol' Kainry, Busta Flex, La Cliqua, Double Pact, Expression Direkt, Stomy Bugsy, Lunatic, Assassin, Polo and La Rumeur.[8][9][10][11][12][13]
Expansion beyond hip hop
[edit]During the same period, Weiss began broadening his work beyond hip hop. He mixed Benjamin Diamond's Strange Attitude and co-mixed Erik Truffaz's The Walk of the Giant Turtle with Benoît Corboz.[14][15] His subsequent credits extended across pop, soul, chanson and alternative music, with projects involving Charles Aznavour, Johnny Hallyday feat. Passi, Vitaa, Ben l'Oncle Soul, Tiwayo, NOËP, Féfé, Amel Bent, Dan Black featuring Kelis, Nneka, Yael Naim, Zazie, Mylène Farmer, Kaolin, Serge Lama with L5 and Tété.[16][17][18][19][14]
Within this broader phase, Weiss recorded and mixed Belgian-Congolese artist Baloji's debut solo album, Hôtel Impala.[20][21] His work also crossed European markets: he mixed most of Selah Sue's self-titled debut album, as well as "Please", her collaboration with CeeLo Green on The Lady Killer.[22][14][6]
Weiss remained active in Switzerland, working on Bastian Baker's debut album Tomorrow May Not Be Better and later mixing "Five Fingers".[23] He also mixed Stress's 2019 album Sincèrement in its entirety.[24][better source needed]
Electronic music
[edit]Alongside his hip-hop work, Weiss developed a parallel body of work in house and electronic music, collaborating with artists and labels associated with the French touch scene. In the early 2000s, he mixed Strange Attitude, the debut solo album by Stardust vocalist Benjamin Diamond. His work in the Paris house scene also included projects for Dimitri from Paris and releases connected with DJ Gregory's Faya Combo label.[14][6] At Studio Davout, he engineered Gregory's Tropical Soundclash and later mixed "Elle".[25][26] His electronic work extended beyond France through projects such as Junior Jack's "See You Dancin'", which he co-mixed.[27]
His wider electronic-music credits included Michel Cleis, Alex Attias featuring Sohan Wilson, Petit Navire featuring Submaryne, Muyè, Djebali, Yves Larock, Yelle, Michael Canitrot, Despina Vandi, Next Evidence, Prassay and Bel Air Project. Later projects included work involving Virgil Abloh with Loco Dice, Drake and Swae Lee, and The Martinez Brothers, while other collaborations connected him with Kenny Dope and DJ Jazzy Jeff.[citation needed]
Weiss subsequently developed a sustained collaboration with Martin Solveig, mixing material from C'est la Vie, the single "Hello" and the album Smash.[28][29][30][31] The collaboration also involved French house producer Julien Jabre, who contributed production and programming to Smash. When Solveig contributed to Madonna's MDNA in 2012, Weiss joined the project as a recording engineer after Madonna asked Solveig to bring his established studio team.[32][6]
Work with Black Coffee
[edit]Weiss began collaborating with South African DJ and producer Black Coffee around 2015, starting with the album Pieces of Me.[2] Their work continued through releases including the 2018 single "Drive", with David Guetta and Delilah Montagu, and the 2019 single "LaLaLa", featuring Usher.[33][34]
He subsequently mixed material for Black Coffee's 2021 album Subconsciously, which won Best Dance/Electronic Music Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.[2]
Contemporary hip hop and alternative work
[edit]During the 2020s, Weiss returned to a sustained body of international hip-hop work while developing parallel collaborations in British and European alternative music.
His work with Evidence began with "Sharks Smell Blood" from Unlearning Vol. 1 (2021), produced by Swiss producer Sebb Bash.[35] That connection continued with Detroit rapper Ty Farris's Fluorescent Mud (2022), an album produced by Sebb Bash and mixed and mastered by Weiss.[36]
In 2022, Weiss mixed Cormega's "Glorious", featuring Nas and produced by the Alchemist.[citation needed]
In 2023, Weiss mixed Earl Sweatshirt and the Alchemist's collaborative album Voir Dire.[37] Further work with the Alchemist included Yasiin Bey's "Kijani"[citation needed] and Big Sean's "Together Forever".[38] He also mixed Chuck Strangers' Evidence-produced single "BMOP", released through Bigger Picture Recordings.[39]
The Evidence collaboration continued with Unlearning Vol. 2 in 2025, which Weiss mixed in its entirety.[40] The album brought together production by Evidence, the Alchemist, Conductor Williams, Graymatter, C-Lance, QThree, Sebb Bash, Beat Butcha and Coop the Truth.[41] The collaboration also extended to Blu's album Los Angeles, which Weiss mixed.[citation needed]
Weiss's continuing work with Evidence also encompassed the Slide Film 45 Series, including releases by Fly Anakin, Boldy James, Theravada and Rakaa.[better source needed] Other mixing credits included projects involving Willie the Kid, Rome Streetz and Estee Nack.
Weiss also collaborated with British producer Finn Billingham on a series of alternative releases. These included Australian post-punk group HighSchool's five-track EP Accelerator (2024), produced by Billingham and mastered by Ben Hillier, Sunken's EP Home Time, and Sam Akpro's Drift and "Evenfall".[42][43][44][45]
Soundtrack recordings
[edit]Weiss also mixed music for film soundtracks. His work during the mid-2000s included soundtrack recordings associated with Ong-Bak, Banlieue 13 and Chok-Dee. He later worked with Kraked Unit on music for three films directed by Cédric Klapisch: Paris (2008), Ma part du gâteau (2011) and Casse-tête chinois (2013).[better source needed]
Studios and technical work
[edit]The technical and studio-building side of Weiss's career developed alongside his recording work. During his time in New York, he met Sterling Sound mastering engineer Tom Coyne in 1997 and began working with him the following year. Weiss took part in early testing of Sterling Sound's eMastering system in 2001 and later represented the company in France and Switzerland, advising clients and coordinating mastering sessions.[46][4]
After returning to Paris, Weiss established Studio C, his own room within Studio Davout, around 2001. Initially built around an SSL 4000-series console, the room later adopted a Neve VR.[4][6]
Weiss created The Room in 2006 and Red Room Paris in 2009. For the latter, he worked on the studio's equipment configuration as well as its electrical, monitoring and signal-chain systems.[47][48] Red Room Paris joined the Miloco network in 2010.
His collaboration with Miloco later led to Red Room London, which opened at the company's Bermondsey complex in 2015. Weiss contributed to its technical design and equipment selection; Miloco managing director Nick Young described Weiss's equipment and technical approach as central to the refurbishment.[49][50]
Weiss also contributed to the feasibility study and technical conception of Red Bull Studios Paris and worked with the Red Bull Music Academy.[better source needed]
Beyond studio construction, Weiss has developed custom amplification and monitoring electronics and undertaken audio-related consulting and product-development work.[6] In 2026, he contributed presets and beta testing to Softube's Weiss DS5 Multiband Compressor.[51][52]
Teaching, workshops and public talks
[edit]Alongside his studio career, Weiss has taught in the popular-music and jazz departments of the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne (HEMU) since 2016. His courses draw on his experience in recording, mixing, production and audio technology. His teaching approaches mixing as an artistic practice, with an emphasis on listening strategies, gain staging, processing and sonic cohesion.[47][3]
He has also presented workshops and public sessions on studio practice. On 15 July 2009, he presented "Mixes and Mastering" at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland.[53] In September 2019, he participated in a panel discussion at Studioszene in Cologne alongside Mick Guzauski and Peter Walsh.[citation needed] On 14 November 2019, Weiss led a listening session at the Budapest Showcase Hub (BUSH) conference in Budapest, publicly reviewing and analysing songs submitted by emerging Eastern European artists.[54] In 2022, he spoke during PSI Audio's 45th-anniversary programme in Yverdon-les-Bains.[7] The following year, he appeared at the L2P Convention at La Place in Paris, combining a discussion of mixing practice with a track-by-track demonstration.[13]
Weiss has additionally contributed to interdisciplinary programmes at the Bern University of the Arts (HKB), coordinated by studio director Benoît Piccand.[55] During the five-day 2024 toolbox "Possibly Maybe: Pop-Codes – Not?", he led sessions on mixing as an artistic practice.[citation needed] He returned for the 2025 Y-Toolbox programme "Trash: Yes, we CAN. A Sonic and Cultural Reclamation".[56]
