Pharmasyntez is a Russian pharmaceutical company engaged in the development and production of medicinal drugs. It was founded in 1997.[1]

The company is engaged in the production and development of medicinal drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis, HIV infection, oncology, type 2 diabetes, hepatitis, and COVID-19.[2][3] Since 2020, it has been included in the list of systemically important enterprises.[4]

In 2025, the company ranked third, and in 2026 fourth, in the Forbes rating "20 Best Pharmaceutical Manufacturers in Russia".[1][5] In 2026, the company's product portfolio included more than 300 medicinal drug items.[6][3]

History

[edit]

In 1992, the Indian student Vikram Singh Punia came to the city of Irkutsk to study medicine. He enrolled in the faculty of general medicine, and a year later transferred to the pharmaceutical faculty of Irkutsk State Medical University. In 1994, he left his studies to go into business.[7]

In 1997, together with partners, he founded the company Pharmasyntez. Punia owned 80% of the company, while Ruslan Polyakov and Anil Ran each owned 10%. At the initial stage, the company packaged already finished tablets. In 1999, the first plant began operating in Irkutsk, where production of generic anti-tuberculosis drugs was established.[7][8]

In 2003, the company's second plant opened in Ussuriysk. From 2003 to 2008, Ruslan Polyakov served as the company's general director, while Vikram Punia provided strategic leadership. In 2008, the company's authorized capital amounted to 100 million rubles.[7]

In 2008, Punia moved to Moscow and relocated the company's head office there; in 2009 he obtained Russian citizenship. In 2010, Punia became the sole owner of the company.[9][7]

In 2011, construction began on a plant for the production of antitumor drugs in St. Petersburg - Pharmasyntez-Nord. The plant began operating in May 2017.[10][11][12]

In 2014, construction began on a plant for the production of active pharmaceutical substances in Bratsk.[13]

In 2015, Punia purchased the bankrupt Yugrafarm plant in Tyumen, where the company began producing glucose-lowering drugs for type II diabetes, infusion solutions, contraceptives, and hormone-regulating medications.[7]

In 2016, the company's net profit exceeded 1 billion rubles, three times the 2015 figure.[7]

In 2017, Punia opened the Pharmasyntez-Nord plant for the production of antitumor drugs (cytostatics) in St. Petersburg.[8]

In 2020 and 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed via video link the opening ceremonies of the BratskKhimSintez and Pharmasyntez-Nord plants.[14][15][16]

Operations

[edit]

Pharmasyntez's production facilities are located in several Russian cities: JSC Pharmasyntez — in Irkutsk, LLC BratskKhimSintez — in Bratsk, Irkutsk Oblast, LLC EST-PHARM — in Ussuriysk, LLC Pharmasyntez-Tyumen — in Tyumen, and JSC Pharmasyntez-Nord — in St. Petersburg.[1]

In 2019, the company produced approximately 70 million packages of medicines per year.[17]

In 2020, the second stage of the Bratskkhimsintez plant was launched. In the same year, Pharmasyntez ranked 5th in the Forbes rating "20 Best Pharmaceutical Companies in Russia".[17]

In April 2022, the Russian Ministry of Health registered Pharmasyntez's drug Kovipir, used in the treatment of COVID-19.[18]

In October 2023, Pharmasyntez introduced the first three batches of the drug Nooredit (an analogue of Phenotropil, owned by Valenta Pharm) with fonturacetam as the active ingredient.[19]

In 2025, the company ranked 3rd, and in 2026 4th, in the Forbes rating "20 Best Pharmaceutical Manufacturers in Russia".[20]

As of 2026, the company's product portfolio included more than 300 medicinal drug items.[6][3]

Compulsory licensing of drugs

[edit]

Pharmasyntez was the first company in Russia to introduce the practice of compulsory licensing into the industry.[21]

In 2016, Pharmasyntez founder Vikram Punia, at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposed introducing the practice of compulsory licensing in Russia. At a session of the "Leaders' Club", Punia told Putin that more than two million hepatitis patients in Russia needed treatment, with each course costing about 3 million rubles, and proposed legalizing compulsory licensing in Russia so that Russian pharmaceutical companies could produce generics of Western drugs, following the example of BRICS countries (particularly India), to combat socially significant diseases (HIV, hepatitis C, tuberculosis).[22]

In 2020, the company was the first in Russia to obtain a compulsory license to produce Remdesivir, a generic version of the drug Veklury made by the American company Gilead. By November 2021, the company had earned 4.6 billion rubles from the sale of Remdesivir, funds allocated from budgets at various levels. The company later obtained a license to produce the weight-loss drug semaglutide (Semuglin; the original drug: Ozempic / Wegovy by Novo Nordisk).[23][24][25][26]

Finances

[edit]
  • In 2019, the company's revenue amounted to 16.118 billion rubles.[17]
  • In 2021, Pharmasyntez's consolidated revenue amounted to 40.4 billion rubles.[8]
  • In 2022, the company's revenue amounted to 38.5 billion rubles.[8]
  • In 2024, the company's total revenue amounted to 50.1 billion rubles.[27]
