Peter Lund Haubro Petersen (21 May 1947, Aalborg, Denmark - 3 December 2023, Montelimar, France) was a Danish painter, writer and poet.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Born in northern Jutland, Denmark[1] he grew up in Copenhagen until the age of 15 when he chose to attend the Sailing School (Søfart Skole) in Esbjerg where he trained first as a junior officer[2] and aspired to naval life, but ultimately left military service in favor of painting. He returned to art as his “first love,” studying at the Royal Danish Academy’s School of Arts (graphic) and then at the University of Copenhagen (English and Danish literature). He completed his art training in Paris, specializing in drawing at the renowned Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Haubro was later described simply as “known for painting”, though he also became a multifaceted artist beyond the easel in his life.
Formative Years and Travels
[edit]Haubro’s early adulthood was marked by travel. He sailed around the world in a Danish navy uniform[2]– visiting South and North America, Canada, China, India and Africa – before abandoning the officer’s path to preserve his freedom. He called himself a true bohemian, traveling Europe to live and exhibit. In Spain (Andalusia) he was the first artist who received a grant from the Foundation Valparaiso in Mojacar, after Beatrice and Paul Beckett founded it in 1990. Here he befriended Klaus Rifbjerg's[3] and Thorkild Bjornvig's[4] and translated later their poems into French. In Albania he collaborated with local painter Andon Kuqali. By the 1990s Haubro had become a European wanderer, eventually living for long periods in Tirana (Albania) and then in southern France (Marsanne).
Cultural and Humanitarian Engagement
[edit]In early 1990s, Haubro spent three years in Romania initially arriving on a Danish humanitarian mission. He continued his humanitarian involvement in post communist Albania where he immersed himself in Albanian life and painted everyday people and political turmoil (figures with rifles, public protests and wrote poetry about the conflict. He also held exhibitions in Tirana [5][6].

Career
[edit]Haubro exhibited widely in Denmark since early creative years in the 1970s. After Albania, where he began to publish his poetry, Haubro settled in France, first in Paris for two years where he studied ink caligraphy and developed interest in cathedral gargoyles[6] and mythical figures, and founded the association "Les Gargouilles Revolte" together with his Danish artist friend Torben Bo Halbirk and other French artists. He then moved to Provence where he made Marsanne his home in later years. He remained active in the Scandinavian art community, often showing works that reflected his travels. Kirsten Kjør's Museum in Frøstrup notes that Haubro’s “colouristic works consist of sampled elements that are integrated and composed into naturalistic paintings with a surreal character,”. Haubro was a “longtime friend” of the museum founders John Anderson and Harald Fuglsang.
Style, Themes and Techniques
[edit]Haubro is primarily a painter (as one biographical source notes), but his works spanned multiple media. His earliest works were graphic, then oil paintings on canvas, often large. Later in 2000s, he found interest in collages and ink caligraphic brushwork inspired by the Chinese caligraphy. Frequently overlaid his collages and oil canvases with calligraphic brushwork. Balkanweb explicitly lists his “facets” as an artist evolving “from oil painting to collages and, most recently, his gargoyles or collages”.
Exhibitions
[edit]Peter Haubro exhibited throughout Europe and occasionally beyond. A 2015 profile observed that his exhibitions form an “artistic geography” spanning Denmark, Sweden, Scotland, Germany, Poland, France, Spain, Romania, Albania, Slovenia, Lithuania, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, Luxembourg and more.

Legacy and Impact
[edit]Peter Haubro’s artistic legacy lies in his synthesis of Nordic and Mediterranean sensibilities. He was often described as a “Danish Viking” at heart and a European citizen in practice. He used his art to comment on the human condition: nationalist turmoil in Albania, cultural memory in Europe, and the universal search for “freedom, rights, citizenship” that he explicitly valued. His international career helped bring attention to cross-cultural dialogue through art. In Denmark he contributed to the art scene by sharing his Balkan and French experiences, and by exhibiting in many local associations in Frederikssund, Vordingborg,Frøstrup (Kirsten Kjærs Museum),Odense ( Filosoffen Kunstbygning), Sobysø on Ærø, etc.. In sum, Haubro’s work chronologically evolved from graphic works in the 1970s, through politically-charged Eastern European 1990 with collages, tusch drawings, aquarelles and oil in the 1990s, then collage-driven installations, collages and oil canvases of the 2000s-2020s. The cohesive thread throughout was a commitment to people and place – as he put it, “My homeland is the people… my friends in Albania, Romania, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Sweden… that is Haubro’s homeland”. His paintings and collages thus form a portrait not just of an individual, but of a Europe in transition. As art historians note, Haubro will be remembered for bringing the color and strangeness of a wide world into Danish painting, leaving behind a uniquely hybrid style.
