Peggy Griffith is an American librarian and library administrator known for developing library services for justice-involved youth in secure residential and correctional settings. She serves as Administrative Librarian for the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth, and Their Families (DSCYF), where she has led initiatives to modernize library access and integrate youth facility libraries into statewide public library systems.[1]
Career
[edit]Prior to joining DSCYF, Griffith served as Assistant Director of the Milford Public Library in Milford, where she helped develop a teen center focused on STEM and arts programming for adolescents. The center included coding, robotics, design, animation, and engineering activities, as well as educational programming and workshops for teens.[2]
Griffith oversees library services across multiple youth residential and secure care facilities in Delaware, including the Ferris School for Boys, a state-operated secure treatment program for adjudicated youth. In this role, she has worked to expand access to reading materials, information literacy instruction, and library programming for justice-involved adolescents.[1]
At Ferris School, Griffith led efforts to replace more than 1,000 outdated or damaged library materials and integrate the facility’s collection into the Delaware Library Catalog, allowing residents to request and receive materials from public libraries throughout the state.[1] Her work has included developing a library curriculum, facilitating access to culturally relevant reading materials, and coordinating programming intended to support literacy development and reentry preparation for youth transitioning back to their communities.[3] Griffith expanded facility collections to include contemporary young adult literature, manga, urban fiction, and culturally responsive materials selected in part through student feedback.[4]
Griffith developed partnerships between Delaware public libraries and youth residential facilities to expand access to library materials and literacy programming for justice-involved adolescents. She also created summer reading and literacy programs modeled after public library initiatives, including workshops and events led by authors, educators, artists, and community partners.[4]
She has also collaborated with Delaware public libraries to assist residents in obtaining public library cards prior to release in order to reduce barriers to continued educational engagement following discharge from state care.[3]
Griffith currently serves as Vice President of the Delaware Association of School Librarians (DASL), a division of the Delaware Library Association.[5]
Griffith is the author of the children’s picture book A Service Dog for Paige, a story about disability awareness and service animals for young readers.[6][7][4]
Recognition
[edit]In 2025, Griffith was named one of ten national recipients of the I Love My Librarian Award, presented by the American Library Association in recognition of outstanding public service by librarians in community-focused roles.[8][9] The award program received approximately 1,300 nominations nationwide that year.[1]
In 2026, Griffith was named a Library Journal Movers & Shakers honoree.[4]
Griffith's work supporting literacy and educational opportunity for justice-involved youth has been discussed in professional publications, including American Libraries magazine.[3]
Griffith's work has also been featured by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.[10]
