Pawan Budhwar is an academic specialising in international and strategic human resource management. He is the 50th Anniversary Professor of International Human Resource Management at Aston Business School, Aston University, and Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor International at Aston University.[1] His research has focused on strategic and international human resource management, human resource management in emerging markets, employee–employer relations, expatriation, digitalisation, artificial intelligence and sustainability.[2]

Budhwar is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and a co-founder and first president of the Indian Academy of Management. He has served as co-editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Management and Human Resource Management Journal.[3] In 2022, he was a joint inaugural recipient of the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management Award for Exceptional Service to the Management Field Worldwide.[4]

Academic career

Budhwar received an MBA from Maharshi Dayanand University in 1986, an MA in industrial sociology in 1988 and an MPhil in industrial sociology in 1990. He received his PhD in comparative human resource management from Manchester University Business School in 1998; his doctoral research compared human resource management in India and Britain.[5]

Budhwar joined Cardiff Business School as a lecturer in 1997 and became a senior lecturer in 2002. He joined Aston Business School as a reader in 2003 and became a professor in 2006. From 2009 to 2013, he served as Associate Dean for Research at Aston Business School.[6]

In 2018, Budhwar became Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor International (India) at Aston University.[7] He subsequently served as Head of Aston Business School.[8]

Budhwar is the 50th Anniversary Professor of International Human Resource Management and Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor International at Aston University.[9]

Research and publications

Budhwar has published extensively in human resource management and management studies. The Academy of Management reported in 2026 that he had published more than 225 journal articles and had written or co-edited 33 books.[10]

His early research focused on comparative and cross-national human resource management, particularly in India and Britain. His work examined the strategic integration and devolution of HRM and subsequently developed frameworks for understanding how national and institutional contexts influence human resource management practices.[11]

His research subsequently broadened to international human resource management, emerging markets, multinational enterprises, expatriation and employee–employer relations. His work has examined human resource management in India, the Asia-Pacific region and other emerging-market contexts.[12]

More recent research has addressed digitalisation, sustainability and artificial intelligence in human resource management. In 2023, Budhwar co-authored an invited review in the Human Resource Management Journal examining generative artificial intelligence, including ChatGPT, and its implications for human resource management and future research.[13]

Editorial work

From 2014 to 2020, Budhwar served as co-editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Management.[14]

Budhwar subsequently became co-editor-in-chief of the Human Resource Management Journal and an area editor of the Journal of International Business Studies.[15]

Professional service

Budhwar was a co-founder of the Indian Academy of Management (INDAM) and served as its first president.[16] He has served as Co-Vice Chair for Research and Publications of the British Academy of Management and as the Academy of Management's All-Academy Chair for Caucuses.[17]

Budhwar is Joint Director of the Aston India Centre at Aston University.[18]He is also a member of the Business and Management Studies sub-panel for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2029.[19]

Honours and recognition

In 2021, Budhwar received the British Academy of Management Medal for Leadership.[20]

In 2022, Budhwar and Jean-François Chanlat were the joint inaugural recipients of the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management Award for Exceptional Service to the Management Field Worldwide. IFSAM recognised Budhwar for his work in developing scholarly communities within the British Academy of Management and Indian Academy of Management, including his role as co-founder and first president of the latter.[21]

In 2026, Budhwar was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Management.[22] He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, British Academy of Management, Chartered Association of Business Schools, Higher Education Academy and Indian Academy of Management.[23]
