Pataka Group, also known as Pataka Group of Industries, is an Indian business group headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal.[2] The company manufactures and markets beedis and packaged tea through Pataka Industries Private Limited, and has significant businesses in high end silk through East End Silks Private Limited, healthcare, and real estate in India and outside India [3][4], [5]

History

[edit]

Pataka Industries was founded in 1952 by Giasuddin Biswas. It was established as Bharat Biri Factory. Over the past several years, the company underwent changes to its name and legal structures. Mustak Hossain, son of Giasuddin Biswas, joined the business in 1980 and he expanded its structure to the current Pataka Group.[6] [7][8]

The company developed its business around the manufacture and distribution of beedis and expanded over time. Within two decades Pataka moved from a Bengal brand to one of the national brands of India. Later, Pataka group expanded into other business verticals such as tea, textiles, property development and healthcare.[9][10] [11]

Operations

[edit]

The company's core business is manufacturing and marketing beedis. The company has marketed several beedi products under the Pataka brand family like 502 Pataka beedi and others.[12][13] Pataka Industries also trades in tea. It markets packaged tea under the brand called "Pataka Chai".[14] In 1993 the company diversified into silk-business through East End Silks Private Limited with Italian collaboration and technology. It is one of the leading manufacturers of silk fibres in India with a market share of more than 50%.[15] [16]

Additionally, the group is associated with GD Hospital & Diabetes Institute in Kolkata.[17][18]
