Draft:PaperWorld

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PaperWorld was a Swedish video game prototype developed in 2009 by a team of game development students and subsequently reworked in 2010-2011 under the newly founded indie-game company Mockshaw.[1] The project began as a simulation game developed during the seven-week Game Concept Challenge 09 (Swedish Game Awards) and was later reworked as an adventure game.

Development

[edit]

PaperWorld was developed in 2009 for Game Concept Challenge 09, a competition in which teams developed a game concept and prototype.[2] The original version was described as a single-player simulation game set in a world made entirely of paper. Gameplay focused on the people living in the towns, the integration of colours, puzzle solving and social experimentation. Players could also compete for a high score by developing the largest population.[3][4]

The project was presented to a judging panel that included representatives from GRIN, Paradox Interactive, Team17, Avalanche Studios, Microsoft and Sony Entertainment Europe.[3]

The original development team consisted of Joel Alenius, Kalle Carlén, Christian Dryden, Desiree Ryden, Johannes Barte, Ng Xue Yuan and Viktor Berger Grönroos. Sound was created by Fredrik Häthén and Calle Leppäjoki of Cool Core Audio.[4]

In early 2010, development of PaperWorld resumed following encouragement from Swedish game publisher Paradox Interactive. The team changed the game's direction and developed a new version as an adventure game over several months. Gameplay footage from this version was published in April 2011.[5]

The project was ultimately left unfinished, although its creators later expressed interest in returning to the project.[5]

Reception and coverage

[edit]

PaperWorld attracted attention from several game publications while it was still a prototype.[3][6][7]

In May 2009, Rock Paper Shotgun published an article by co-founder John Walker titled A Fold In Space & Time: PaperWorld, describing the project as intriguing and "completely adorable" and referred to its concept as a "feel-good simulation game".[6]

In June 2009, The Game Creators featured PaperWorld in its newsletter and video gallery and highlighted its paper-based world as an innovative and visually striking concept.[3]

On 29 May 2009, the gaming blog Just One More Game also featured PaperWorld as a recent entry in the Swedish Game Awards, describing it as a simulation game and praising its visual presentation.[7]
