- Comment: This is a tricky one: there's no doubt PUBG is a notable topic and that sourcing exists on its narrative. But what this article is doing is mostly fusing a plot description with a self-directed thesis drawing a link between the plot and transmedia storytelling that isn't reflected in sourcing. Parts of this read like original research, and others don't feel like they reflect the point of the article, which purports to be about the PUBG metanarrative. Whilst plot summaries can be self-sourced, the diagram is a good example of something so specific and technical it really needs to be verifiable. Wikipedia isn't an infinite repository of any and all information and overly specific detail on games tends not to be helpful.With all this in mind, can you please identify reliable secondary sources that discuss the PUBG Universe narrative arcs in-depth? The PUBG Universe refers to the expanded world derived from PUBG: Battlegrounds, developed by the South Korean video game company, Krafton. Krafton’s core strength is in creating and expanding original IP. With PUBG: Battlegrounds as its breakout hit, the company now focuses on long-term brand building. They expanded storytelling: through cinematic shorts, animated content, and novelizations set in the PUBG universe. Krafton’s direction is grounded in premium content and PC/console development, with a growing interest in transmedia storytelling.[1]
Plot and Setting
[edit]Battlegrounds is set in a fictionalized version of Earth, spanning roughly a century from the 1960s to the 2050s; the Battlegrounds games began in 1994 on Erangel. These lores are chronicled across various PUBG Universe media.[2].
The story of PUBG:Battlegrounds begins with the in-universe who “Sergei Kalimnick”. Sergei was born and raised in Erangel. In 1965, when Sergei was just a boy when he witnessed his entire island getting destroyed. But, the young Sergei survived. This brought a whole new meaning to his life. He became the first-ever survivor of Erangel. Post the incident, Sergei got his hands on prison riot security tapes. He started selling them for a profit. This was later dubbed as the Gulag tapes. These tapes brought attention to a mysterious group called the investors. These investors wanted Sergei to do something similar, but on a larger scale. In 1994, Sergei ran the first-ever battlegrounds in his hometown Erangel. Ever since that, Sergei has become one of the most powerful people in the world.[3]

The clip opens on a scene of a computer screen showing an online call between five people. At first, the conversation seems casual as the bunch goes back and forth about seemingly unrelated things. Martin, who's computer screen the viewer will see throughout the video, flips through a couple of tabs, including what seems to be a screen of security footage. On this screen, one can see "COMBATANTS REMAINING 38" which hints at a match of PUBG taking place. However, from this point on, is where the short film turns dark. One of the people on the call, Nelson, asks Martin if he knows how much people pay to watch "this," in reference to the match. One can begin to understand that people are watching and betting on the match taking place. It is then established that Nelson, is control of the blue circle that slowly closes in on players during gameplay and is stationed in a secret bunker in Sanhok. All of a sudden, after seeing some security cameras freeze, the computer loses connection and the group loses track of one of the squads. What unfolds after is a series of panicked conversations as the group tracks the lost squad to the secret bunker. Confidently, Nelson assures the group that no one has ever found the bunker but would soon be proven fatally wrong. After Nelson is seemingly killed by the rogue squad after they break into the bunker, and one of the members frantically leaves the call, an unknown caller enters. The mystery caller presses the remaining members to clean up the mess and find the "Sanhok four" or everything that they hold dear to them will be taken from them.[7] | |||
Progress
[edit]Krafton, the developer of PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, is an example of bottom-up creation: it produced the online game in 2017 and then conceived the PUBG Universe. In 2021, Newstatemobile was released. NEW STATE is a sequel game that shares its worldview with PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, unfolding the PUBG Universe's worldview through diverse media such as short novels and webtoons.[8] In a 2026 announcement, Krafton revealed that it is continuously developing 26 new projects to expand the PUBG Universe, of which 12—including the survival game Subnautica 2—are slated for release within the next two years.[9]
