Onko Chishin Co., Ltd. (Japanese: 株式会社温故知新) is a Japanese hotel operation and production company headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The company operates small-scale retreat-style accommodation, mainly in hot spring areas and on remote islands in Japan, and as of February 2026 operates 11 hotels and four restaurants.[1] Its name derives from a passage in the Analects of Confucius meaning "to learn from the past and gain new understanding".[1]

The company has been described by the Nikkei MJ as a frontrunner in Japan's "destination hotel" segment, developing properties intended to serve as the purpose of a trip rather than merely a place to stay.[2] In July 2024 it was the subject of an episode of the business programme Cambria Palace on TV Tokyo, which reported that the company had expanded to 14 properties nationwide within six years of entering hotel operations.[3]

Since 2018, several properties operated by the company have been listed in the Michelin Guide's accommodation ratings, including its Pavilion and Key distinctions.[4][5] The company has also been selected for Nikkei Cross Trend's "100 Companies Creating Future Markets" list from its 2024 edition onward,[6][7][8] and has appeared in the Financial Times/Statista ranking of high-growth companies in the Asia-Pacific region.[9][10]

History

[edit]

Onko Chishin was founded on 1 February 2011 by Tomoki Matsuyama, who had previously served as a director at Hoshino Resorts.[1][3]

In 2015, the company entered hotel operations by converting an art museum in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, designed by Tadao Ando, into Setouchi Retreat Aonagi, a seven-room property.[1][3] In 2018, it began operating Iki Retreat Kairi Murakami in Iki, Nagasaki Prefecture.[1] The same year, Setouchi Retreat Aonagi received a five red pavilion rating in the Michelin Guide Hiroshima–Ehime 2018 special edition,[11][12] and in 2019 Iki Retreat Kairi Murakami received a five pavilion rating in the Michelin Guide Fukuoka–Saga–Nagasaki 2019 special edition.[5]

In 2022, the company opened three properties: Goto Retreat ray in Gotō, Nagasaki Prefecture, designed by Yukio Hashimoto; Setouchi Keirin Hotel 10 in Tamano, Okayama Prefecture; and maison owl in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture, designed by Junya Ishigami.[1] In 2023 it began operating Rebun Hotel Saryo in Rebun, Hokkaido.[1]

In 2024, the company opened Cuvée J2 Hôtel Osaka in Osaka, designed by Shinichi Ogawa, and Hotel La Vigne Hakuba in Hakuba, Nagano Prefecture.[1] In 2025 it reopened Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko in Higashiizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, and began operating Otaru Retreat Kuramure in Otaru, Hokkaido, and Il Azzurri in Nishiizu, Shizuoka Prefecture.[1] The hospitality trade publication HOTELS reported the addition of the two hot spring ryokan that year, describing Onko Chishin as an operator of small luxury hotels across Japan with a portfolio of 15 hotels and restaurants.[13]

In 2024, Setouchi Retreat Aonagi and Goto Retreat ray were both awarded one Key in the Michelin Guide's newly introduced hotel distinction,[4][14] and both retained the distinction in 2025.[15]

Brands

[edit]

The company classifies its properties into four categories: Retreat Selection, Craft Selection, Gateway Selection and Another Story.[1] Retreat Selection comprises small-room-count properties centred on hot springs, cuisine and spatial design; Craft Selection comprises properties built around specific themes such as Champagne, Japanese wine and keirin; Gateway Selection comprises properties serving as bases for regional travel; and Another Story consists of maison owl.[1]

Architecture and design

[edit]

Architects and designers engaged by the company include Tadao Ando, Yukio Hashimoto, Makoto Nakayama, Shinichi Ogawa and Junya Ishigami.[1][16]
