The Nova Knicks are a group of professional basketball players on the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) who originated from the Villanova Wildcats men's basketball program. The group was formed in 2023 and currently includes the trio of Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges. Donte DiVincenzo was part of the original group, while Bridges joined in 2024. The Nova Knicks played a vital role in the Knicks' resurgence in the 2020s, culminating in the team winning the NBA Finals in 2026, the Knicks' first since 1973.
The current and former members of the group have also won multiple awards and championships during their time at Villanova. All four were members of the 2015–16 Villanova team, which won the national championship. Brunson, Bridges, and DiVincenzo also won a second national championship in 2018.
Villanova years
[edit]2015–16
[edit]Villanova's 2015–16 team was the first to feature all four of the eventual Nova Knicks. Josh Hart originally began at Villanova in 2013, and had established himself as a key contributor to the Wildcats lineup, winning the Big East Conference Men's Basketball Sixth Man of the Year award in 2014–15. Mikal Bridges had committed to Villanova in 2013, but redshirted his true freshman season in 2014–15. Jalen Brunson and Donte DiVincenzo both entered as freshmen for 2015–16. Brunson particularly was a heavily-anticipated five-star recruit for Villanova, and was immediately regarded as one of the top freshman point guards in the country upon his arrival.[1]
Hart and Brunson both started for the Wildcats for the season, averaging 15.5 points and 9.6 points, respectively. Bridges mainly served in a bench role, while DiVincenzo suffered a foot injury nine games into the season and redshirted the remainder of his freshman year. Villanova went 27–4 in the regular season, winning the Big East regular season title. Hart was named first-team All-Big East, and Brunson was named to the Big East All-Freshman team. Hart, Brunson, and Bridges' contributions in the NCAA tournament helped Villanova on a deep run that culminated in a 77–74 victory over North Carolina in the national championship game, the program's first national championship since 1985.
2016–17
[edit]With Josh Hart entering his senior year, the 2016–17 season would become the only one with all four Nova Knicks receiving significant playing time. Together, the four helped Villanova to their most successful regular season in program history, going 27–3 and winning both the Big East regular season title and conference tournament. Villanova also finished the regular season as the top-ranked team on the AP poll for the first time. Hart led the way for the Wildcats, averaging 18.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists, and was named Big East Player of the Year and Big East co-Defensive Player of the Year. Both Hart and Brunson were named to the first-team All-Big East, Bridges was named to the second-team and was named the other Big East co-Defensive Player of the Year, and DiVincenzo was named to the All-Freshman team. Despite the regular season success and being, in the NCAA tournament, the top-seeded Wildcats were upset in the second round by Wisconsin.
2017–18
[edit]After the season, Josh Hart declared for the 2017 NBA draft and was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 30th overall pick and was subsequently traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
New York Knicks
[edit]2022–2024: Building the Nova Knicks
[edit]On July 12, 2022, Brunson signed a four-year, $104 million contract with the New York Knicks in free agency, joining his father Rick who is an assistant coach for the team. On February 8, 2023, the Knicks acquired Josh Hart in a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers. The following off-season saw DiVincenzo sign a four-year, $50 million deal with the Knicks on July 8, 2023, meaning the three Wildcats were playing under the same Knicks roster.
2024–2025: Switching guards
[edit]On July 6, 2024, the Knicks acquired Mikal Bridges from the cross-town Brooklyn Nets, which meant that four former Wildcats were playing for the Knicks. However, three months later, the Knicks would trade away DiVincenzo to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of a three-team trade in which they acquired Karl-Anthony Towns.
