Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL is a British pharmaceutical entrepreneur. He is the founder of Morningside Pharmaceuticals, a pharmaceutical company established in 1991, and serves as Pro-Chancellor of De Montfort University.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Kotecha was born in Uganda and came to the United Kingdom in the early 1970s following the expulsion of Asians under the regime of Idi Amin.[2]
He studied chemistry and completed a PhD at Imperial College London before undertaking postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge.[3]
In 2023, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Leicester.[4]
Career
[edit]In 1991, Kotecha founded Morningside Pharmaceuticals, starting from a garage in Loughborough.[5]
The company supplies generic medicines in the United Kingdom and international markets.[6]
Kotecha served as chair of the Confederation of British Industry East Midlands Regional Council.[7]
In 2022, Morningside Pharmaceuticals was acquired by Aspire Pharma.[8]
Public and philanthropic work
[edit]Kotecha is chair of the Randal Foundation, a charitable organisation supporting projects in education and healthcare.[9]
He was appointed Pro-Chancellor of De Montfort University in 2022.[10]
Kotecha has served as a trustee of The King's Trust, as a member of the board of the Centre for Social Justice, and as a University of Warwick Ambassador.[11][12][13]
Kotecha received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Imperial College London in 2022.[14]
Honours
[edit]Under Kotecha's leadership, Morningside Pharmaceuticals received the Queen's Award for Enterprise: International Trade in 2012 in recognition of the international growth of Morningside Pharmaceuticals.[15]
Kotecha was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours.[16]
