NandGame is an educational browser-based puzzle video game created by Danish developer Olav Junker Kjær and launched in July 2018.[1] The game tasks players with constructing digital logic circuits, progressing sequentially from universal NAND gates to an operational, programmable microprocessor.[2]

Gameplay

[edit]

NandGame is structured around sequential circuit design exercises. Each stage presents a functional specification or truth table that the player must satisfy using previously constructed digital components.[3]

  • Logic gates: Fundamental gates, including NOT, AND, and OR, are constructed from base relays or NAND logic.
  • Arithmetic logic: Basic components are integrated into multiplexers, adders, and an arithmetic logic unit (ALU).[1]
  • Memory: Latches and registers are introduced to store data and establish sequential logic.[2]
  • Central processing unit: Previously constructed components are combined into a simplified microprocessor architecture capable of executing machine code instructions.[3]

The interface consists of a schematic canvas where components are placed and connected via wiring buses. Completed subcircuits undergo automated verification before being abstracted into modular blocks for subsequent levels.[1]

Development and background

[edit]

The project was developed as an interactive implementation of the curriculum outlined in Noam Nisan and Shimon Schocken's educational project From Nand to Tetris and Charles Petzold's book Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software.[2] Kjær developed the software to demonstrate functional completeness in computer hardware design.[1]
