NV Play is a sports technology company headquartered in Christchurch, New Zealand. The company develops cloud-based software for cricket scoring, live streaming, video analysis and high-performance analytics. Its platform is used by national governing bodies and recreational competitions, with the company reporting deployments in more than 57 countries.[1][2]

It was founded by brothers Matt and Gus Pickering, until NV Play was incorporated as a standalone entity in 2018, having previously been operated as the cricket-technology division of Christchurch-based digital agency NV Interactive.[2] Its software is used by national governing bodies including the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), New Zealand Cricket and Cricket Ireland.[3][4]

History

[edit]

Origins at NV Interactive (2001–2017)

[edit]

The cricket-technology products that later became NV Play originated within NV Interactive. In 2001, NV Interactive developed Feedback Cricket, a performance-analysis tool built in collaboration with Zach Hitchcock, then New Zealand Cricket's travelling high-performance video analyst.[2]

In the mid-2000s, NV Interactive was contracted to develop live ball-by-ball scoring software for CricInfo (subsequently acquired by ESPN), replacing the site's existing scoring system.[1]

In 2006, NV Interactive entered a long-term partnership with New Zealand Cricket to deliver a range of high-performance software and operational systems for the national programme.[2] This included the launch of the first of many iterations of the New Zealand Cricket website, with live scoring functionality.[5]

In 2010, a similar partnership was established with the England and Wales Cricket Board, covering international and first-class cricket.[2][1]

Incorporation as a standalone entity (2018)

[edit]

NV Play's core scoring product Pro Scorer was first released in 2013 under the ownership of New Zealand Cricket. In 2018, the cricket-technology division of NV Interactive was incorporated as a separate company, NV Play Limited, and all residual intellectual property was purchased from NZC. This established technology formed the foundation of what is now the NV Play platform. NV Interactive continues to operate as an independent digital agency.[2][6]

Reach and adoption

[edit]

According to the company, NV Play's software is used in more than 57 countries.[1] Its largest market is England and Wales, where NV Play supplies scoring and data services on behalf of the England and Wales Cricket Board across multiple levels of cricket.[3] The company has stated that its software is also used by Cricket Hong Kong and the Mumbai Indians franchise.[2] In April 2022, Cricket Ireland and NV Play announced a partnership to provide scoring and competition-management tools to recreational clubs in Ireland.[7]

In New Zealand, the company has partnerships with several provincial associations. Canterbury Cricket announced NV Play as a commercial partner in 2025.[4]

Play-Cricket Scorer Pro (PCS Pro)

[edit]

Since 2018, NV Play has been contracted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to deliver Play-Cricket Scorer Pro (PCS Pro), a scoring platform used for recreational and professional cricket in England and Wales.[3]

PCS Pro is used by all 18 first-class counties and 20 National Counties sides in England and Wales, and by the England men's and women's international teams. It is also used by clubs and schools across the United Kingdom.[3]

The software includes features such as scoring tools, scoreboard integration, and integration with the ECB Play-Cricket system.[3] Additional functionality includes live streaming and video analysis tools provided as optional modules.

In February 2022, NV Play announced a licensing fee for recreational users of its Play-Cricket Scorer Pro software in England and Wales. Following feedback from clubs and discussions with the ECB, the introduction of fees was deferred until the 2023 season.[8][9]

Technology

[edit]

NV Play's platform is hosted on Microsoft Azure, which the company has stated is used to process live scoring data from multiple concurrent matches.[1] The platform uses cloud infrastructure to support real-time data processing.

The system integrates with third-party websites and league management systems via APIs, enabling display of live scores, statistics, and results.[2]

NV Play owns the Winning and Score Predictor (WASP), a statistical tool originally developed at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. The model produces win probability and performance metrics for limited-overs cricket and has been extended by NV Play in collaboration with one of its original developers, Dr Scott Brooker.[2]

In 2019, Microsoft featured NV Play in a case study describing the company's use of Azure in cricket scoring and analytics.[1]
