Draft:NBA Europe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NBA Europe is a proposed professional basketball league in Europe organized by the National Basketball Association (NBA) and International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The league is expected to begin play in October 2027[1] and is planned to comprise 16 teams (12 permanent and 4 via annual qualification).[2] Reports have indicated that bids for certain franchise slots in select cities have exceeded $1 billion.[3]

History

[edit]

The NBA first hosted preseason games in Europe beginning in 1980, and one to two regular season games each season since 2011, with exhibition games being played between NBA and EuroLeague teams between 2007 and 2015.

On March 27, 2025 the NBA announced a joint exploration with FIBA Europe of a new professional basketball league in Europe comprising permanent and qualification based team slots.[4]

Reports have indicated the following cities as candidates for NBA Europe franchises[5]
