Muniandy Rajoo, also known as R. Muniandy, is a Malaysian former karateka who competed in kumite. He represented Malaysia at the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Competitive career
[edit]Muniandy represented Malaysia in international karate competitions, competing primarily in men's kumite events.
1997 Southeast Asian Games
[edit]At the 1997 Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta, Muniandy won the silver medal in the men's open-weight kumite event. The gold medal was won by fellow Malaysian Arivalagan Ponniyah, while Muniandy finished with the silver medal.[1]
1998 Asian Games
[edit]At the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, Muniandy won the gold medal in the men's 70 kg kumite event.
Muniandy defeated Dipak Shrestha of Nepal 6–0 in the round of 16, Vu Quoc Huy of Vietnam 6–5 in the quarter-final, and Raafat Al-Karad of Syria 6–2 in the semi-final. In the final, he defeated Mehdi Amouzadeh of Iran 6–1 to win the gold medal.[2]
The Malaysian medal record for the 1998 Asian Games lists Muniandy Rajoo as the gold medallist in the men's 70 kg kumite event.[3]
1999 Southeast Asian Games
[edit]At the 1999 Southeast Asian Games in Brunei, Muniandy won the gold medal in the men's 70 kg kumite event.
Contemporary reports of the competition recorded Muniandy defeating Indonesia's Sonny Simangunsong in the semi-final before defeating Brunei's Yahya in the final to win the gold medal for Malaysia.[4]
2001 Southeast Asian Games
[edit]At the 2001 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Muniandy won the bronze medal in the men's individual 70 kg kumite event.
The medal was recorded in Malaysia's results for the 2001 Southeast Asian Games, with R. Muniandy listed as the Malaysian bronze medallist in men's individual kumite 70 kg.[5]
Coaching and athlete development
[edit]After his competitive career, Muniandy remained involved in karate and was involved in the development of younger Malaysian karate athletes.
Athletes associated with his coaching and training involvement included Gunachantiran A/L Pannirsenam, Nadarajah A/L Pannirsenam, Prabakar A/L Balasamy and Kalaivanan A/L Munisamy.
At the SUKMA IX in Sabah in 2002, Gunachantiran Pannirsenam won a bronze medal in the men's under-70 kg kumite event, while Nadarajah Pannirsenam won a bronze medal in the men's over-80 kg kumite event.[6]
