Motorpoint is a British automotive retailer based in Derby, England. The company sells nearly-new and used vehicles through a network of 22 retail stores across the United Kingdom and an online platform. It also operates a business-to-business online auction site, Auction4Cars. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
History
[edit]Foundation and early years
[edit]Motorpoint was founded in April 1998 by Gary Warren and David Shelton. The company began trading from a single site in Derby. At first, it sold ‘like new’ imported UK-spec cars, allowing UK car buyers to benefit from lower vehicle prices in mainland Europe [1]. As one of the UK's earliest car supermarkets[2], it received extensive press coverage because of the Consumers' Association (CA) “Rip Off Britain” campaign, which exposed how much more consumers in the UK were paying compared to mainland Europe[3][4].
Soon after first opening, Motorpoint launched a then-novel car finance plan called Boomerang, one of the first examples of a personal contract purchase (PCP) scheme, giving customers the option to hand back their car at the end of their agreement, buy it outright or use accrued equity to purchase their next car[5].
Continuing popularity led to Motorpoint opening a national call centre in 2000, allowing customers to buy their cars over the phone[6]. Between 2001 and 2006, Motorpoint opened a further 4 stores in Burnley, Glasgow, Newport and Peterborough[7].
Expansion and flotation
[edit]In 2008, the group launched Auction4Cars, an auction platform that sells cars directly to the wholesale motor trade. Auction4Cars currently operates from 11 Motorpoint sites in the UK[8].
The business continued to grow from 2012 to 2013, and Motorpoint opened stores in Birmingham and Chingford. In 2013, Motorpoint appointed Mark Carpenter as Group CEO after serving two years as the company’s CFO. It opened its Widnes site in 2014 and its Birtley store in 2015, taking the total number of Motorpoint dealerships to nine[9].
On 13 May 2016, Motorpoint floated on the London Stock Exchange[10], raising £100m with a share price of 200p during the IPO[11][12]. It opened stores in Castleford and Oldbury in the same year.
Motorpoint continued its expansion between 2017 and 2020, opening stores in Sheffield, Swansea and Teesside, as well as opening a new head office in Derby[13].
Recent developments (2020-present)
[edit]As the pandemic waned in 2021, Motorpoint opened its 15th site in Manchester, followed by stores in Maidstone and Portsmouth in 2022. In 2023, the business celebrated its 25th birthday and opened three new stores in Edinburgh, Coventry and Ipswich[14].
In 2024, Motorpoint rolled out its first in-house MOT testing facility at its Coventry store and opened its 21st store in Norwich.
In July 2026, Motorpoint opened a new store in Leeds. To celebrate the opening, Motorpoint Leeds looked to sponsor 22 youth sports teams across the city and surrounding areas[15].

Awards and recognition
[edit]In 2013, Motorpoint was named Car Supermarket of the Year by Motor Trader Magazine[16]. In 2014, Motorpoint was named the Ultimate Digital Car Supermarket by Auto Trader Group[17]. 2015 saw Motorpoint named one of the Sunday Times Top 100 Best Companies to Work For for first time. It has since made the list a further seven times, including in 2025[18]. In 2023, the Financial Times recognised Motorpoint as one of Europe’s climate leaders[19].
Sponsorships
[edit]Since 2016, Motorpoint has been the name sponsor of the Nottingham Arena, the biggest live entertainment venue in the East Midlands[20]. The company has previously sponsored the Cardiff Arena[21], the Sheffield Arena, and the British Supersport Championship.
In 2026, Motorpoint was announced as the principal commercial partner for the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL)[22].
