Modine HVAC is the heating, ventilation, and indoor air quality (IAQ) business of Modine Manufacturing Company, headquartered in Buena Vista, Virginia.[1][2] It makes unit heaters, infrared heaters, make-up air units, and ventilation equipment for commercial, industrial, agricultural, educational, and residential buildings.[3] Its main manufacturing plant in Buena Vista opened in 1963.[4]

History

[edit]

Arthur B. Modine founded Modine Manufacturing Company in 1916 in Racine, Wisconsin.[5] In 1918, the company introduced its first unit heater, which combined a radiator and a fan with steam piping so that buildings could be heated without extensive ductwork.[5] The unit heater became the basis of the company's heating business.[6]

Modine opened its manufacturing plant on Magnolia Avenue in Buena Vista in 1963.[4] In 2023, the Buena Vista City Council marked the plant's 60th anniversary; Modine then employed 315 people there and was the city's largest employer.[7]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, demand rose for the plant's school ventilation equipment as schools worked to improve classroom air quality, and Modine expanded its workforce in the area.[8] In 2021, the company also opened a manufacturing facility in Rockbridge County.[4]

In November 2025, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin announced that Modine would invest $19.6 million in its Buena Vista operations, create 57 jobs, and move the headquarters of its heating business from Racine to Buena Vista.[2][4] The project included a warehouse, office, and testing facility.[9] The Buena Vista City Council approved $300,000 in tax and fee incentives for the expansion, and The News-Gazette named it the area's top story of 2025.[10] At the time, Modine employed nearly 600 people at its Buena Vista and Rockbridge County facilities.[4]

In September 2026, Modine announced that it would change its name to Modexus Solutions after completing the spinoff of its Performance Technologies business and its merger with Gentherm, subject to shareholder approval.[11][12]

Products

[edit]

Modine HVAC's products fall into three categories.[3] Its heating equipment includes gas-fired, electric, hydronic, and oil-fired unit heaters, as well as infrared heaters and convectors. Its cooling, ventilation, and IAQ equipment includes ceiling cassettes, destratification fans, and unit ventilators. Its engineered products include controls, duct furnaces, and make-up air systems. Product lines include the Hot Dawg series of gas-fired and hydronic unit heaters.[13]

The company sells mainly through distributors, contractors, and sales representatives.[14]
