Michael Metzger is a German battery scientist and a professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, where he leads a research group examining lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries.[1][2]

Education and Career

[edit]

Metzger studied physics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), earning his PhD in 2017 with a dissertation titled "Studies on Fundamental Materials Degradation Mechanisms in Lithium-ion Batteries via On-line Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry".[3]

From 2017 to 2020, Metzger worked as a senior research engineer at Robert Bosch LLC in Sunnyvale, California, focusing on advanced lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and solid-state batteries.[1][2]

In 2021, he joined Dalhousie University as the Herzberg-Dahn Chair for Advanced Battery Research working with Tesla and alongside battery researcher Jeff Dahn.[4][5][6]

Research

[edit]

Metzger's research focuses on the electrochemistry and degradation of lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries.[2] He pioneered the use of online electrochemical mass spectrometry to detect gases during battery charging providing information about degradation reactions.[7] Metzger collaborated with BMW on the discovery of oxygen release from nickel-rich layered oxide cathode materials in lithium-ion cells.[8][9]

Metzger's group reported in Nature Materials that polyethylene terephthalate (PET) tape, commonly used to secure the electrode assembly during cell manufacturing, is not chemically stable in batteries.[10] PET breaks down into dimethyl terephthalate causing self-discharge, i.e., a gradual loss of charge in idle devices.[10][11] Replacing PET tape with chemically stable polypropylene tape largely eliminated this effect.[10][11][12]

Metzger has argued that sodium-ion batteries are well suited to stationary storage because they avoid scarce resources such as lithium and cobalt.[13] He has published on degradation reactions in layered-oxide/hard-carbon sodium-ion pouch cells[14] and the development of practical alloy-based negative electrodes for sodium-ion batteries.[15]

As of 2026, Metzger has published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and is a named inventor on 15 patents.[2] His research has been recognized on Stanford University and Elsevier's "World's Top 2% Scientists" list (Energy sub-field) in 2023 and 2025.[16]
