Michael Bouchard Jr. is a Michigan Army National Guard officer and the 2026 Republican nominee for Michigan's 10th congressional district. He won the August 4 Republican primary and will face Democratic nominee Christina Hines in November.[1]
Military career
[edit]Bouchard served in the U.S. Army's 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. After joining the Michigan Army National Guard, he deployed to Iraq.[2][3]
Congressional campaign
[edit]Bouchard entered the race in November 2025 after Representative John James chose to run for governor rather than seek reelection.[3] The Republican primary field also included Robert Lulgjuraj, Justin Kirk and Steffan Demetropoulos; Lulgjuraj later withdrew.[1]
In February 2026, Jacob Rubashkin of Inside Elections reported that Bouchard's shared name with his father, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, gave him an early advantage in recognition and political support. The sheriff had helped organize support before his son returned from deployment. At that point, Bouchard had raised about $550,000 in his first two months, though $200,000 was reserved for the general election. At an event for police officers in Warren, Rubashkin observed attendees bringing up the sheriff with Bouchard; the candidate said he was running on his own experience.[2]
A separate Detroit News analysis published May 12, 2026, found that previous donors to the sheriff's statewide campaigns had supplied at least 43% of his son's itemized contributions through March 31, 2026. Bouchard described the overlap as the result of longstanding relationships.[4] Bouchard went on to win the August 4 Republican primary; Hines won the Democratic primary.[1]
