Melbourne Handball Club is a handball (team handball) club based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The club competes in domestic handball competitions in Australia and is affiliated with Handball Victoria and the Australian Handball Federation.[1]

The club fields teams in local and national competitions, and occasionally in international tournaments. It is also involved in the development and promotion of handball in Victoria.[2]

History

The club, formerly known as Doncaster Handball Club, was established in 1993 by players seeking to support the development of handball in Victoria.

In 2019, Melbourne Handball Club became an incorporated association (not-for-profit) and has since operated as a volunteer-run sporting organisation.[3] The club is administered by a committee responsible for governance, membership administration, competition participation and development activities.

Venues

Melbourne Handball Club has previously held training sessions at University High School and Melbourne Sports Centres – Parkville. It is currently based at Kensington Community and Aquatic Recreation Centre in Kensington.[4]

Teams

With limited media exposure and a player base that relies heavily on international participants, club membership numbers and participant demographics vary from year to year. The club currently caters only to adult women and female-identifying players aged 16 and over, due to a lack of suitable venue availability in and around Melbourne. The club is actively engaging with venues in an effort to restart both a men’s programme and a youth programme.[5]

Melbourne Handball Club (then Doncaster Athletic Club) players Vera Ignjatovic and Mari Edland competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics, in Sydney, Australia. [11][12] Since then multiple of the club's players have represented the Australian national team in international competition at both junior and senior level.

International Apperances

In 2019, Melbourne players, Nora Estgfäller and Sophie Marie-Angelique, represented University of Queensland Handball Club at the inagural IHF Women's Super Globe in Wuxi, China.[14] The Super Globe is an international club competition for continental champions. In 2019, IHF President Hassan Moustafa stated: “Back in 1997 the first IHF Men's Super Globe was held and since then it has gone on to become an important competition in the global handball calendar. It is a medal that every player wants to add to their collection, and I am certain that the IHF Women’s Super Globe will replicate that success”.[15] To date, the 2019 tournament remains the only edition of the Women’s Super Globe, while the competition continues to be staged exclusively for men’s teams.[citation needed]
