Matteo Peterlini (born 1970 in Rovereto, Italy) is an Italian interdisciplinary artist based between Berlin and Rovereto. His practice spans photography, video, drawing, objects, algorithms, mechanical devices and custom software, often combined within installations and performances.
Life and work
[edit]Peterlini was born in Rovereto in 1970. During the early 1990s he was active in the Italian Mail Art network.[1] In November 1991 he took part in a performance at the Clinamen self-managed social centre in Rovereto with American noise artist GX Jupitter-Larsen of The Haters, a recording of which was later issued on the cassette Hate Italy (1992).[2]
From the early 2000s he developed a practice in conceptual and relational photography. In 2002 and 2003 his works 2amici and Doppiamano were included in the 86th and 87th group exhibitions of the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice.[3] In 2003 he developed Meyouother (IoTuAltro), a web-based project in which submitted passport photographs are processed through software to generate composite portraits. The project was reviewed in May 2003 by the new-media magazine Neural.[4] It was subsequently included in the Rhizome ArtBase, the online archive of new media art affiliated with the New Museum in New York.
In 2004–2005, V6 was shown at the MART – Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto as part of Gemine Muse 2004, a programme for young European artists in European museums. Random Magazine described the work as exploring an idea of beauty that would never be equal to itself.[5]
In 2006, images from the Backscape series were published in Passages – Dialogue with the Dark, a volume issued by Mimesis edizioni with texts by José Saramago, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Massimo Donà and Silvano Petrosino.[6] In 2007, Backscape was exhibited at the Casa del Mantegna, Mantua,[7] and Meyouother was included in Economia ed arte. Dalla bottega al video, a programme of the Trento Festival of Economics, with a catalogue text by curator Giovanna Nicoletti.[8] In December 2007, Work. Art in Progress, the journal of the Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea di Trento, published an interview with Peterlini by Julia Trolp under the title Strategie del paradosso.[9]
In January 2008, Corriere del Trentino profiled the artist, who described his practice as "faccio l'artista sbagliando" ("I make art by getting it wrong").[10] In 2008–2009, Backscape was included in Mutations II – Moving Stills, a touring exhibition of the European Month of Photography, with venues including the Berlinische Galerie in Berlin, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome and the Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean in Luxembourg. In the accompanying catalogue, curator Cristina Natalicchio described Peterlini's use of the pixel as a measuring unit as a "programmatic choice", producing images that are "the result of a calculating process tending to the infinite".[11]
In 2009, Meyouother and Zeroazero were presented in FotoGrafia – Festival Internazionale di Roma at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni.[12]
Following his relocation to Berlin, Peterlini developed Missing, Vermisst, Scomparso, a project on the representation of missing persons that he submitted in 2011 to the Agency of Unrealized Projects, an open database of unrealized projects run by e-flux and the Serpentine Gallery. The project was presented in events associated with the initiative at the Kopfbau during Art Basel (2011) and at the daadgalerie in Berlin (2012).[13]
In 2018, Backscape was included in Vicino. Non qui. Percorsi di creatività trentina, a group exhibition at the Galleria Civica di Trento, part of the MART museum system, dedicated to artists from the Trentino region.[14]
In 2024 Peterlini was in residence at VIR Viafarini-in-residence in Milan with the Missing Museum project. In 2025 his video work Zeroazero (2005) was included in Fuori Gioco. Sguardi d'artista sul mondo del calcio, a film screening programme curated by Carolina Latour at the MAXXI – Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo in Rome, accompanying the exhibition STADI. Architettura e mito.[15][16]
In 2026, under the name Matteo Setti Peterlini — combining his surname with that of Ezio Setti, a maternal great-uncle who died at Mauthausen concentration camp in 1944 — he presented Sono tranquillo, altrettanto siatelo voi, a public art installation at Rovereto railway station accompanied by a documentary exhibition at the Museo della Città, Rovereto. The project, developed with the Nuovo Cineforum Rovereto as lead applicant and promoted by the Fondazione Museo Civico di Rovereto, was among those selected by the Fondazione Caritro Bando Memoria 2024.[17] It was reported by RAI News TGR Trento,[18] Corriere del Trentino,[19] Buongiorno Südtirol,[20] Vita Trentina,[21] and Il T Quotidiano, which published a dedicated profile by Anna Maria Eccli.[1]
Artistic practice
[edit]Peterlini works across photography, video, drawing, objects, algorithms, mechanical devices and custom software, combining these media within installations and performances. He has described his approach as one based on removing a central element from a given situation in order to refocus attention on what remains, citing the digital removal of the ball from the broadcast footage of the 1982 FIFA World Cup final in his video Zeroazero.[10]
The strategy frequently produces images and works structured around paradox: a self-portrait assembled from other people's faces (in Meyouother), or a football match without the ball (in Zeroazero). Critic Julia Trolp discussed this dimension of his practice under the title "Strategie del paradosso" ("Strategies of paradox").[9] In the Mutations II catalogue, Cristina Natalicchio identified Peterlini's use of computational procedures as a deliberate structural element of his images.[11]
A further strand of his work draws on archives, family photographs and personal documents, treated as material to be reopened rather than preserved.[1] Several projects rely on the active participation of contributors: in Meyouother, for example, viewers donate their own passport photographs, which are then algorithmically recombined to generate new composite portraits.[8]
