Matt Schichter is a Canadian film producer, documentary director and former radio host and online interviewer, based in Glasgow, Scotland. He directed the documentary short Lennon or McCartney (2014) and the feature documentary CFNY: The Spirit of Radio (2026), about the Toronto radio station CFNY-FM.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Schichter grew up in Montreal and Waterloo, Ontario.[2] He studied broadcasting at Conestoga College in Kitchener, and in 2006 received the college's John Larke Memorial Award and its K.A. MacKenzie Memorial Award for innovative use of technology.[3]

Career

[edit]

Radio and interviewing

[edit]

In October 2003, while studying at Conestoga, Schichter launched The BackStage Pass, a weekly hour-long music interview show distributed over the internet. The website History of Information describes it as the first podcast. Guests in its first season included B.B. King, Third Eye Blind, Gavin DeGraw, the Beach Boys and Jason Mraz.[4] The show later continued as Matt Schichter Interviews, which released more than 700 episodes between 2003 and 2014.[5] In 2007 he joined the new Calgary station Fuel 90.3 as an evening and weekend host,[6] and later that year became its music director while continuing his on-air shift.[7] He was later music director and an on-air host at the Edmonton station The Sound 95.7 (CKEA-FM).[8][9] He also interviewed actors and musicians for MSN Canada's entertainment site, including former Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland in 2014.[10][11] Footage from a decade of these interviews became the basis of his 2014 short Lennon or McCartney.

Film

[edit]

Schichter wrote and directed the 2014 documentary short Lennon or McCartney, which compiles footage of 550 actors, musicians and celebrities, drawn from ten years of his interviews, answering whether they prefer John Lennon or Paul McCartney. The Houston Chronicle described him as a "former radio and online entertainment host" who had interviewed more than 550 celebrities over ten years; those featured include Robert De Niro, Lady Gaga, Kevin Hart and David Byrne.[12][13][14][15]

In Toronto, Schichter produced several independent features. These included the musical Mother of All Shows, starring Wendie Malick,[16][17] and the dark comedy Mother Father Sister Brother Frank (2024), starring Enrico Colantoni and Mindy Cohn, which Gravitas Ventures released in the United States.[18][19] It was reviewed in The Guardian on its UK release.[20]

After moving to Scotland, he was line producer on the British thriller Row, starring Sophie Skelton and Bella Dayne.[21] The film won Best UK Feature at the 2025 Raindance Film Festival.[22] He was UK line producer on Sukkwan Island, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and has since worked as a producer and line producer with the Glasgow production company Blazing Griffin. His credits there include Faith, directed by Paul Andrew Williams, which premiered at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, and pickups for James McAvoy's directorial debut California Schemin'.[23]

His feature documentary CFNY: The Spirit of Radio traces the history of CFNY-FM and features interviews with musicians including Geddy Lee and Jim Kerr.[1][24] It premiered on TVO in January 2026,[25][26] and PBS acquired it for US broadcast in September 2026.[27] It was covered by Billboard Canada[28] and reviewed in outlets including RadioInsight, Brioux.TV, Biff Bam Pop and RadioGeek.[29][26][30][31]
