Draft:Mathman (app)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathman is a Czech educational mobile application for learning and practicing mathematics, aimed primarily at lower- and upper-secondary school students. It was created by Jan Maloušek, a student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication of the Brno University of Technology, and is available for free for Android via Google Play.[1]

Origin and development

[edit]

Maloušek began working on the application in 2019 as part of his studies at VUT in Brno.[2] For the project, which at the time was being developed as his bachelor's thesis, he received the Rector's Award at VUT's academic assembly in November 2019.[3] He continued development as part of his master's thesis at the Department of Telecommunications of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication, under the supervision of Kryštof Zeman.[4] In summer 2020, the application caught the attention of judges in the T-Mobile Rozjezdy business-plan competition, placing third in its South Moravian regional round.[5]

Description

[edit]

The application's central character is a superhero of the same name, Mathman, who guides users through individual mathematics courses and, at the end of each, has them battle a math-themed monster.[1][5] Each course is divided into three parts: an interactive theory section with questions, a practice section with exercises sorted by difficulty, and a battle section where the user applies the learned knowledge against a monster assigned to that topic.[5] The range of topics expanded with later updates: in spring 2020 the application contained five topics,[2] and by mid-2021 it offered thirteen courses covering topics such as fractions, equations and complex numbers.[6] The basic version of the application is free and contains advertisements; a paid premium version removes ads and additionally allows users to create their own tests.[5]

Reception

[edit]

The application has been covered by a number of Czech technology and news websites. According to Dotekomanie.cz, by mid-2021 the application had more than 50,000 downloads and a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.[6]
